FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
I OWN PROPERTY. WHY DIDN’T I RECEIVE A NOTICE?
If you own property, there could be several reasons why you didn’t receive a notice. If your property is homestead-exempt and falls within the $75,000 exemption, you owe no taxes and will not receive a tax notice. If you purchased property this year, the property may remain on the prior owner’s name on the current year’s tax roll. As the owner, YOU are responsible for all taxes owed even if you did not receive a bill.
CAN I WRITE ONE CHECK FOR MULTIPLE PROPERTIES?
Yes. Include all tax notice payment stubs and write the notice numbers on the check. If the check is NSF or is returned for any reason, all properties are unpaid and could be delinquent and sent to tax sale. A fee is charged for any returned checks or online e-check rejects. Only the person issuing the check will be notified of the issue.
WHAT IF I HAVE A MORTGAGE?
Homeowners should always first check with their mortgage company before paying a bill to avoid double payments. Anyone who purchased property within the year will more than likely have their tax bill mailed to the previous property owner, but the current owner is responsible for all taxes due.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T PAY MY TAXES?
Taxes become delinquent after December 31, with interest accruing at a rate of 1% per month until paid. Taxes that remain unpaid after December 31 will accrue an additional cost for delinquent collections, abstracting, certified noticing, advertising, and other costs of Tax Sale. Any property with a homestead exemption that is sold at tax sale will lose their homestead exemption and have to reapply for it once the property is redeemed. This means that your taxes will go up because you don’t have the $75,000 exemption.
DOES PAYING PROPERTY TAX GIVE OWNERSHIP?
No. The owner of the property is the person who is listed on the deed. The deed is the legal document that shows who owns the property.
