Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced the results of Saturday’s DWI checkpoints as well as a special enforcement operation, all of which were conducted in the southern area of Lafourche Parish this weekend. In all, over 50 citations were issued and nine people were charged with DWI offenses.

On the afternoon of Saturday, February 15, deputies embarked on Operation Safety Blitz, a seatbelt enforcement operation, as part of LPSO’s year-long effort to raise awareness of highway safety. Beginning at 3 p.m. on the afternoon of Saturday, February 15, LPSO deputies and officers assisting from the Thibodaux Police Department were positioned at various locations throughout Larose, Cut Off and Galliano and were on the lookout for unrestrained vehicle occupants and any other notable violations. During the operation, deputies and officers conducted traffic stops resulting in 31 seat belt violations, 6 driver’s license violations, 3 child restraint violations, and 15 other various violations. One of the seat belt violators, Tim Rodrigue (W/M, D.O.B. 07/07/72) of 400 East 40th Street in Golden Meadow, was arrested and also charged with DWI (2nd Offense), Possession with Intent to Distribute Morphine and Possession with Intent to Distribute Hydrocodone after he was found with several pills and performed poorly on a Standardized Field Sobriety Test. He is currently being held at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux in lieu of $21,100 bond as set by Judge Ashly Bruce Simpson.

Deputies were stationed in two locations for Saturday’s DWI checkpoints. One checkpoint was held on LA Highway 1 adjacent to the South Lafourche Sub-station in Cut Off, and the other was held on LA Highway 308 in front of the South Lafourche Branch Public Library in Cut Off. The checkpoints began around 9 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, and concluded around 3 a.m. Sunday, February 16. During these times, deputies charged five (5) additional drivers with DWI and reported a dozen other violations. Ashlie Cantrelle (W/F, D.O.B. 2/08/91) of 104 East Avenue A in Larose was arrested for DWI (2nd Offense) and was released Sunday evening after posting $500 bond as set by Judge Simpson.  Other DWI violators included:

  • Rhea Marullo (W/F, D.O.B. 03/27/73) of 110 Grand Isle Parkway, Grand Isle
  • Terry Guidry (W/M D.O.B. 03/05/66) of 309 West 11th Street, Larose
  • Lydia Guidroz (W/F, D.O.B. 09/21/66) of 17329 West Main Street (Apartment A), Galliano
  • Dagoberto Gutierrez (H/M, D.O.B. 11/13/75)of Loc Pozo de Jarillos, Ojocalient
A total of nine people were charged with DWI on Saturday, including six from these operations and three additional DWI arrests during routine patrol.

“We hope these efforts send a clear message to the public as we enter carnival season that we have zero tolerance for impaired driving,” said Sheriff Webre, who also wishes to remind citizens of the “No Refusal” policy in Lafourche Parish. “Anytime a suspected impaired driver refuses to submit to a breathalyzer test, deputies will seek a search warrant to have the driver’s blood tested.”

Sheriff Webre also noted, “While the number of DWIs on Saturday was higher than normal, deputies encountered more than ten times that amount of responsible citizens obeying traffic and DWI laws. In fact, several people mentioned they had designated a driver for the evening. This was a very encouraging sign for us.”
