Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office Now on Instagram

5/28/2014 by Brennan Matherne

Sheriff Craig Webre announced the launch of the official Instagram profile for the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. Instagram is the latest social media outlet through which the Sheriff’s Office has launched an official profile, joining Facebook, Twitter and YouTube profiles which were launched in February 2013.
“We are excited to announce our launch on Instagram, giving the public a fourth way to connect with us through social media,” said Sheriff Webre. “The overall goal of our social media presence is to provide first-hand information, photos and videos to the public through an avenue they understand and with which they are comfortable.”
Created in 2010, Instagram is a mobile-based photo-sharing, video-sharing, and social networking service that enables users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters, and share them. It is one of the fastest growing social media outlets with around 200 million monthly users, not far behind Twitter which has around 255 million. Facebook remains the most popular social media outlet by far with around 1.3 billion monthly users. In April 2012, Facebook purchased Instagram for approximately $1 billion.
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office utilizes each social media outlet differently. All LPSO news stories are posted to Facebook and Twitter, but both also feature exclusive content. YouTube is utilized only for videos, especially for Crime Stoppers and public education. LPSO will use Instagram only to post photos, graphics, and brief videos, especially those of a positive nature, and will occasionally include exclusive content. Citizens are, therefore, encouraged to follow LPSO on Instagram, even if already following on other social media sites.
“Each social media outlet has its own function and audience, and we hope to appeal to a younger target audience through Instagram,” said Sheriff Webre. Independent studies estimate that around 90% of Instagram users are under the age of 35. Sheriff Webre said this makes Instagram a great place to educate teenagers about the dangers of sexting, cyberbullying, and other related crimes.
Public Information Officer Brennan Matherne manages social media for the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. “Since our foray into social media in 2013, we have found that while crime articles receive a lot of attention, we receive the most enthusiastic feedback from our photographs and infographics,” said Matherne. “This is especially true for photographs of deputies and the public interacting on a proactive or positive level, since that is how most people come into contact with law enforcement.”
While Instagram can be accessed and viewed from a personal computer, most functions can only be performed through the official mobile application which is free to download on smartphones and several other devices.
