Arrest of Note: August 2, 2014

8/4/2014 by Brennan Matherne

Just before 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, deputies on patrol in the Raceland area notice a vehicle traveling on Brocato Lane make a left turn onto Easy Street and another left turn onto Williams Street failing to use a turn signal at both turns. Deputies initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as Morris Mitchell, and they learned he had an active warrant for his arrest for Contempt of Court. After inspecting the Mitchell’s vehicle, deputies noticed the window tint appeared to be darker than permitted by law, and a subsequent test confirmed the tint was illegal. When deputies asked about the contents of the car, Mitchell admitted there were several partially smoked marijuana cigarettes inside, and he then consented to a search of the vehicle. During the search, deputies discovered those items, as well as 28 small individual bags containing suspected marijuana. They also found two weight scales and other paraphernalia. Mitchell was placed under arrest and transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked on the outstanding warrant for Contempt of Court, as well as Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Illegal Window Tint, and a violation of 32:104 (Turning Movements and Required Signals). He is being held in lieu of $26,200 bond, as well as $400.50 in fines and costs stemming from the contempt warrant. He is also being held for Louisiana Probation and Parole.
