Sheriff Craig Webre announced two men arrested in separate incidents over the weekend, have attracted the attention of agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The first incident occurred at 2:00 AM Saturday, February 6, 2010 when a deputy observed a pickup truck driving south on Hwy 308 in Cut Off without its headlights on. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop and sped up to speeds in excess of 100 MPH when a State Trooper also attempted to stop the vehicle. During the pursuit, the driver of the truck sped into the opposite lane of traffic, forcing other vehicles off the road. No one was injured.
The driver of the truck lost control, crashing the truck at Hwy 308 and East 161st street. At that point, Arturo Ramos (W/M, DOB 4/8/1984, 135 E 157th Street, Galliano) attempted to flee the scene and was tased by Trooper Frank Besson. Ramos resisted officers as he was placed under arrest, threatening one officer’s family and threatening to blow up the Galliano Substation. Ramos refused to be tested on the Intoxilyzer machine. Ramos is charged with Driving without Headlights (R.S. 32:301), Aggravated Flight from an Officer (R.S. 14:108.1), Reckless Operation of a Vehicle (R.S. 14:99), Red Signal Violation (R.S. 32:232), Operating a Vehicle without Lawful Presence in the United States (R.S. 14:100.13), Extortion/Threats (R.S. 14:66), three counts of Resisting an Officer on scene and at the Substation (R.S. 14:108), DWI 4th offense (R.S. 14:98), Improper Lane Usage (R.S. 32:79).
In the second incident, deputies were called to Blackie’s Restaurant Saturday around 2:30 PM after a concerned citizen reported a Hispanic male refusing to leave and trying to start fights with customers. The man was gone when deputies arrived, but they were able to locate him in a wooded area near N. Oak Street and he was bleeding. Juan Beltran (W/M, DOB 9/6/1984, 400 N. Carol St, Lockport) told deputies his neighbor had hit him because he was intoxicated then provided deputies with a Social Security card and a permanent resident card as identification. Beltran then admitted both cards were fake. After witnesses positively identified Beltran as the person who caused the disturbance at Blackie’s, he was booked with 2 counts of Disturbing the Peace while Drunk (R.S. 14:103).
Both men are in this country illegally and are being held at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center pending their transfer to ICE officials for deportation proceedings.
