LPSO Explorer Leader to be Honored by NSA - Sgt. Lesley Hill Peters

LPSO Explorer Leader to be Honored by NSASheriff Craig Webre is proud to announce that Lieutenant Lafate Elliott Day, Jr. has been named the National Sheriffs’ Association’s 2010 Law Enforcement Explorer Post Advisor Award (see attached release from NSA). “I could not be prouder of Elliott,” said Sheriff Webre. “He has done an amazing job with the Explorers for more than a decade. The recognition by NSA is just another validation of that fact, Webre added. Day will receive the award at the NSA Conference in Anaheim, California June 28, 2010.

On February 5, 2010, Day accompanied the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Explorer POST 323 to the Winterfest Conference in Gatlinburg, TN. A total of 18 teens and 5 adults made the trip. The Explorers ages 14 to 21 attended competition meetings that Friday then toured the Gatlinburg Aquarium.

On Saturday, the Explorers competed in Crime Scene, Unknown Threat, Accident Investigation, and Bomb Threat. They also participated in a dodge ball competition, placing 4th. Other events they competed in were the Law Enforcement Written Exam, Squeeze Box, and “V” squeeze. Several Explorers also served as Staff members for some events as well. All POST members then participated in and helping to lead the Explorer roundtable before the closing ceremonies were held.

“Lt. Day works tirelessly to ensure that our Explorers who want to attend sessions like those in Gatlinburg are not left behind because of economic circumstances,” said Webre. “With these uncertain economic times, Elliott continues to find support from our community for a program that truly makes a difference in the lives of these young adults,” Webre added.

Several teens have made the transition from Explorer to fully commissioned officer with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office.
