Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced the arrest of a Thibodaux man for attempted murder on Saturday. Colby Perez (age 28) led deputies on a pursuit after attacking another man with a pitchfork.
Just before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, deputies responded to a disturbance at a residence on St. Joseph Street in Mathews. Upon arrival, deputies found a man in his 20s with head trauma. Deputies learned Colby Perez had reportedly entered the residence and announced he would kill the man, who had a protective order against him. He then allegedly struck the man multiple times in the head with a pitchfork before fleeing the scene in a black car. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries and later transferred to University Medical Center in New Orleans.
After obtaining a description of the vehicle, a deputy located the car in the parking lot of a truck stop on LA Highway 308 in Mathews. The driver, identified as Perez, noticed the deputy and left the area, crossing over Bayou Lafourche to LA Highway 1 and proceeding northbound. Deputies pursued, attempting to initiate a traffic stop. Perez turned down St. Joseph Street and headed back to the original scene but then proceeded back to LA 1 where he continued northbound. Deputies successfully deployed a spike strip on LA 1 near the intersection of St. Charles Bypass Road, and Perez stopped in a store parking lot at the intersection. He then exited the vehicle and appeared to surrender, but as deputies approached, he began aggressively resisting before being taken into custody.
Deputies learned Thibodaux Police had handled a complaint on Friday, March 16, in which Perez had borrowed the black car from a relative and had not returned it. Following an investigation, a warrant was issued for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle. Deputies also learned that on December 5, 2017, in another incident handled by Thibodaux Police, Perez was charged with Simple Battery on the same victim, and Perez was order to stay away from him.
Perez was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked with Attempted Second Degree Murder, Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Illegal Possession of Stolen Things, and Violation of a Protective Order. He was also booked on the aforementioned warrant for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, as well as warrant for Contempt of Court for Thibodaux City Court. His total bond is set at $146,400.
