Nicholas Pepper

Detective Sergeant Nick Pepper was killed when his vehicle was intentionally rammed by a suspect during a vehicle pursuit on Louisiana Highway 1, near Kleinpeter Road, in Thibodaux at about 4:00 a.m. Deputies were assisting the Houma Police Department after officers attempted to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation. Officers and deputies pursued the vehicle until it stopped near Lafourche Crossing. As officers issued commands to the subject, the man suddenly accelerated and intentionally drove into Sergeant Pepper’s car. Sergeant Pepper was transported to Thibodaux Regional Health System where he succumbed to his injuries. The subject was arrested and charged.
Sergeant Pepper had served with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office for 15-1/2 years and had served in law enforcement for 24 years. He had previously served with the Houma Police Department and the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and son.
Larry Boudreaux

On February 20, 2020, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office School Guard Larry Boudreaux was directing traffic along LA Highway 20 in front of Chackbay Elementary School at approximately 7:50 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle. Boudreaux died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash.
Boudreaux began his career with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office in July 2016 and began serving as a school crossing guard in Bayou Blue. He was later reassigned to Chackbay Elementary School. He also spent hours volunteering at the LPSO Shooting Range. In addition to serving with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, Boudreaux is also a U.S. Army veteran.
Martha Woods-Shareef

Sergeant Martha Woods-Shareef succumbed to injuries sustained when she was run over by a stolen vehicle while responding to an alarm at a convenience store at 1530 Highway 20 in Chackbay. She had responded to a local convenience store at 2:30 am after an alarm was activated at the store. Dispatchers heard a scream over her radio, and then moments later a store employee used the radio to inform dispatchers that she had been injured and needed an ambulance. She was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries. The suspect was arrested approximately four hours later hiding underneath a house.
Sergeant Woods-Shareef had served with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office for 15 years. She is survived by her husband and daughter.
Chaney Champagne

Detective Chaney Champagne and Sergeant Kurt Harrelson were killed when their patrol car collided with a truck on State Highway 308 approximately one mile north of Lockport. At approximately 1530 hours, Sergeant Harrelson and Detective Champagne were responding to a call reporting an elderly woman had driven her car into a canal and the car was filling with water. While en route to the call, their car slid on the rain-slicked road into an oncoming truck. Both officers were killed as a result of the collision.
Detective Champagne had served with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office for 22 years. He is survived by his mother, two sisters, and four brothers.
Kurt “Woody” Harrelson

Sergeant Woody Harrelson and Detective Chaney Champagne were killed when their patrol car collided with a truck on State Highway 308 approximately one mile north of Lockport. Sergeant Harrelson had served with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Department for over 10 years. He is survived by his wife, 10-year-old son, and 4 year-old-daughter.
Thomas Procter

Deputy Sheriff Tom Procter succumbed to a gunshot wound he sustained on May 6th, 1978, after responding to a shoplifting call at a grocery store. When Deputy Procter arrived the store security officers had the shoplifting suspect in custody. As Deputy Procter was gathering information, the shoplifter’s boyfriend appeared and began a disturbance. The man then attacked Deputy Procter and was able to gain control of his service weapon. The man fired one shot, striking Deputy Procter. Deputy Procter was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to the wound two weeks later. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to prison. He was later released and placed on probation.
Deputy Procter had served with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office for two years. He was survived by his two daughters and one son.
