FIRST CASE OF U.K. VARIANT APPEARS IN LOUISIANA
Posted 1/19/21 – A variant of the COVID-19 virus has been found in the Greater New Orleans area. Referred to as the “U.K. variant” because of its prevalence in the United Kingdom, this main difference is this one spreads more easily from person to person. It has NOT been shown to cause more severe disease, and experts believe the current vaccines are effective against it. We’ve been following safety precautions for nearly a year now, and it’s understandable that some of you may be tempted to let your guard down. But because of the prevalence of COVID-19 in the state AND this new variant which spreads more easily, it’s more important than ever that everyone is washing hands, wearing masks, avoiding gatherings, etc. Please be vigilant! You can read more about this variant from the Governor’s Office press release HERE.

VACCINE TO BE ADMINISTERED TO LPSO EMPLOYEES THURSDAY
Posted 1/11/21 – If you indicated on the LPSO employee survey that you DO want to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, you should have received an email from Captain J.P. deGravelles today with instructions and a schedule which includes your time slot. Please be sure you read ALL information and follow the directions. Those who receive the first dose on Thursday will receive the second dose 21 days later on February 4. If you answered YES on the survey, but did not receive the instructional email today, contact Captain deGravelles as soon as possible.
WHAT IF I SAID “NO” TO THE VACCINE BUT CHANGED MY MIND?
Posted 1/11/21 – We understand that some employees indicated they DO NOT want to receive the COVID-19 vaccine but have since changed their mind. LPSO is currently working to get additional vaccines for another round of employees. In the meantime, or if we are unable to obtain more vaccines, you may have to pursue public vaccination options. At this time, vaccine distribution is only available for certain sectors of the public – primarily those 70 years of age or older. In the coming months, it will be made available to more and more groups of people, eventually including an age group or other category you are in. If you do get the vaccine outside of LPSO, we simply ask that you inform Captain deGravelles, especially if you are on a list to get vaccinated through LPSO (and thus, no longer need to). You may be required to show proof of vaccination.
CURRENT STATUS OF PUBLIC VACCINE AVAILABILITY
Posted 1/11/21 – As mentioned above, the vaccine is currently being rolled out to the first tier group which, most notably, includes people ages 70 and over. Ochsner St. Anne Hospital in Raceland has begun vaccinations by appointment for patients 70+ or patients on dialysis. Appointments can be made via the MyOchsner website. Meanwhile, Lady of the Sea Hospital in Galliano is compiling a list for when they receive the vaccine. To get on the list, a person aged 70+ must call (985) 632-6401 to give name and contact information. Otherwise, anyone 70 and over can call to schedule a vaccination at any location listed on the state’s website. Here is the permanent website link, and here is a PDF of the current locations.

TRUMP SIGNS COVID-19 RELIEF BILL WITH $600 CHECKS
Posted 12/28/20 – After calling the legislation a disgrace and hinting he may not sign it without changes, President Trump DID sign the COVID-19 stimulus package on Sunday. In a statement, President Trump said he signed it with the understanding that Congress would – among other things – consider increasing stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000 per adult. Congress is expected to introduce that bill today, but it’s unclear whether there is bipartisan support for the effort to pass.
WHAT WILL BE THE AMOUNT OF YOUR STIMULUS CHECK?
Posted 12/28/20 – If there is no further action, the stimulus checks will be for $600 for each adult and dependent following the same rules of qualification as the first round of checks. Therefore, a family consisting of a husband, wife and two children would get $2,400 ($600 x 4). Barring any delays, you could see a direct deposit as early as next week. As for the possibility of $2,000 checks, it is reported that the legislation introduced today would increase the amounts to $2,000 per adult but no increase for dependents. If that bill passes, then the same family of four would receive $5,200 ($2,000 x 2 adults + $600 x 2 children). Of course, anything could change, or it could fail outright leaving us with the original bill of $600 checks per person.
COVID-19 VACCINE SCAMS
Posted 12/28/20 – As with anything else, scammers will always take advantage of any situation to scam people out of money. Last week, the FBI and other federal agencies issued a warning of fraud schemes related to COVID-19 vaccines. You can view the release HERE, or download the informational flyer HERE.

TRUMP ASKS FOR $2,000 CHECKS FOR STIMULUS PACKAGE
Posted 12/23/20 – After the House and the Senate passed the COVID-19 stimulus package on Monday, it was widely expected that President Trump would sign the bill on Tuesday. Instead, Trump posted a video on Twitter calling the legislation a “disgrace” and hinting he may not sign it without changes. Namely, he asked for Congress to return with direct payments of $2,000 per individual, instead of the proposed $600 in the bill. He also aired concerns about “wasteful spending” in the bill. You can view President Trump’s full video address HERE.
SO WHAT COMES NEXT FOR STIMULUS PACKAGE?
Posted 12/23/20 – The Washington Post described Trump’s video as landing “like a sonic boom in Washington,” surprising even some of Trump’s close aides. For now, it appears the stimulus package may end up in limbo for a while. Without any further Congressional action, and if Trump refuses to sign the bill, the government will shut down on December 29 because aside from COVID-19 relief, the bill also funded the government past that date. House Democrats are expected to present legislation for $2,000 stimulus checks tomorrow, but it’s not expected to pass. At this point, we’ll continue to keep an eye on the bill, and update you on major developments only.
LOUISIANA TO REMAIN IN MODIFIFED PHASE TWO
Posted 12/22/20 – Today, Governor Edwards announced that Louisiana will remain in a modified Phase Two for another 21 days – until at least January 13, 2021. The current order is set to expire tomorrow, and while there were rumors of further restrictions, Louisiana will remain “status quo” for the time being. During his briefing, Governor Edwards once again made a strong plea to Louisiana residents to take all proper precautions, and to NOT have typical holiday plans such as large parties, etc.
SIX MORE LAFOURCHE PARADES POSTPONED/CANCELED
Posted 12/22/20 – On Monday night, the Town of Golden Meadow decided that no parades would roll during the 2021 Mardi Gras season due to COVID-19. The town will consider rescheduling parades later in the year if each krewe desires and if restrictions are loosened. This morning, the Town of Lockport announced its parade would also be canceled. With the previous announcement that all Thibodaux parades would not roll during Carnival season, this leaves only the parades in Larose, Gheens and Choupic left in question. We expect an announcement on these soon from President Chaisson.
TRUMP TO SIGN STIMULUS PACKAGE TODAY
Posted 12/22/20 – On Monday, both the House and the Senate passed the COVID-19 stimulus package as expected, and President Trump is expected to sign the legislation today. As we mentioned yesterday, there will be stimulus checks of $600 per adult and $600 per dependent under 18 following the same rules of qualification as the first round of checks. Direct deposits could arrive as early as next week, per Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
SECOND COVID-19 VACCINE APPROVED
Posted 12/21/20 – Last week, the FDA issued an emergency use authorization for Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine – the second after previously approving the Pfizer vaccine. The Louisiana Department of Health will receive 79,500 doses of the new Modern vaccine this week, and nearly 30,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. The Moderna vaccine is slated for distribution to nursing homes, hospitals and first responders. At this time we have no new update as to when the vaccine will be ready for distribution to LPSO employees who desire to take it, but we will keep you updated.
STIMULUS CHECKS PART OF BILL EXPECTED TO PASS TODAY
Posted 12/21/20 – Over the weekend, after months of negotiations, Congressional leaders reached an agreement in principle on another stimulus package, which includes stimulus checks. While we have not read the full text of the 5,593-page document, it is reported that the checks will be in the amount of $600 per adult and $600 per dependent following the same rules of qualification as the first round of checks. For example, a family consisting of a husband and wife with two children, and which makes less than $150,000 annually, will get a check for $2,400 ($600 x4). The package also contains more money for the Paycheck Protection Program, unemployment payments, and other federal programs. The bill is expected to be voted on by both houses of Congress today. Direct deposits could arrive as early as next week, per Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
GOVERNOR EDWARDS TO ADDRESS MEDIA ON TUESDAY
Posted 12/21/20 – Governor Edwards is set to address the media on Tuesday, December 22 regarding his next proclamation on COVID-19. His current order – a revised Phase Two – is set to expire on December 23. There are currently rumors about a possibility of going back to Phase One, but those are just rumors for now. Ultimately, the decision will be revealed by tomorrow’s news conference.

VIDEO: VACCINE INFORMATION FROM WHITE HOUSE SUMMIT
Posted 12/16/20 – In our last briefing, we referenced how Lafourche Parish President Archie Chaisson recently attended a vaccine summit at The White House which set his concerns at ease to the point he is now encouraging everyone to take the vaccine. He has pinpointed two portions of the summit which provided him with the most powerful insight, and we have cut those clips for you:
- SUMMIT CLIP 1 (5 mins 27 secs): Dr. Moncef Slaoui, chief medical adviser for Operation Warp Speed, details how the vaccines were developed so quickly without “cutting corners.”
- SUMMIT CLIP 2 (4 mins 34 secs): Dr. Peter Marks, director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research at the FDA, provides additional perspective on how the quick development of the vaccines and why Americans should trust the vaccines.
Of course, you are more than welcome to watch the entire summit which begins with the President’s remarks at around the 43:32 mark of THIS VIDEO.
FDA INFORMATION AND VIDEOS ON VACCINES
Posted 12/16/20 – For those who want to take a “deeper dive” into the vaccine information, the FDA has dedicated a portion of its website to the vaccines. You can learn more about Emergency Use Authorizations, basics of vaccines, and specific information about the Pfizer vaccine. There are informational videos for many of the topics as well. Again, we are providing all this information to you to help you make the best decision for you and your family on whether you will take the COVID-19 vaccine, but we ask that you review the information quickly and take part in the survey as soon as possible.
COVID-19 VACCINE ARRIVES IN LOUISIANA
Posted 12/14/20 – On Friday, the FDA issued an emergency use authorization for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine – the first of what is expected to be several vaccines. According to the Governor’s office, Louisiana’s frontline health care and emergency services workers will receive the first doses of the Pfizer vaccine. The second vaccine, by Moderna, is expected to get federal emergency use authorization this week, and it will for staff and residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities. After these first groups of Louisianans are vaccinated, the vaccine will be made available to additional groups, including law enforcement, based on a priority system developed by the Louisiana Office of Public Health. Through vaccination of a significant portion of the population, Louisiana will be able to achieve herd immunity to this virus.

In a recent interview, Chaisson told The Courier, “I can say I was skeptical about it before going to the summit in DC, but after hearing the science behind the creation and the fact checking by the FDA, I would be the first one in line and would encourage everyone to do this. It’s the best and quickest way to get back to our normal lives.”

LOUISIANA MOVES TO A REVISED PHASE TWO TODAY
Posted 11/25/20 – Yesterday, Governor Edwards announced that Louisiana moves back to a revised version of PHASE TWO today, as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to increase throughout the state. This is after the White House Coronavirus Task Force told Governor Edwards last week that Louisiana should implement more restrictions to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Primarily, the move back to Phase Two reflects a change in occupancy restrictions. Sporting events and bars are limited to 25% capacity. Gatherings are also limited to 25% occupancy or up to 75 people for indoor gatherings and up to 150 people for outdoor ones. Restaurants, coffee shops, cafes, casinos, gyms, fitness centers, and non-essential retail stores are limited to 50% capacity. Churches and places of worship are now limited to 75% capacity. OTHER GUIDANCE IN REVISED PHASE TWO
Posted 11/25/20 – There is no change to LPSO operations at this time, but we will keep you posted if any changes occur in the future. In addition to the specific guidance in the order, Governor Edwards is encouraging businesses to allow employees to work remotely as much as possible, and he has directed all state agencies to do the same. The statewide mask mandate remains in place as well. He is also urging everyone to avoid gatherings with individuals who are not part of your household. As provided previously, here are links for Thanksgiving Tips and Tips on Wearing a Mask.

GOVERNOR SAYS LOUISIANA IS IN ITS “THIRD SURGE”
Posted 11/19/20 – During his weekly During his weekly COVID-19 update today, Governor Edwards told the press that the data indicates Louisiana is no longer in the plateau of COVID-19 cases as it has been the past 3 months. “Make no mistake: Louisiana is in its third surge,” said Edwards. This week, the White House Coronavirus Task Force recommended tighter restrictions for Louisiana, but the state remains in Phase Three at this time. Edwards said he will do whatever is necessary to help control the pandemic, which could mean tightening restrictions before the current Phase Three order expires on December 4. He and state health officials again urged Louisianans to follow all recommended precautions such as washing hands, maintaining six feet of distance from anyone outside your immediate household, and most importantly, complying with the statewide mask mandate.
CDC: CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING ONLY WITH YOUR HOUSEHOLD
Posted 11/19/20 – During the Governor’s press conference, he also STRONGLY urged people to celebrate Thanksgiving only with members of your immediate household. “If you’re planning on a Thanksgiving that looks like a previous Thanksgiving, you’re making a mistake,” he said. This comes after the CDC urged Americans to avoid travel for Thanksgiving and not to spend the holiday with people outside their household. If families do decide to mingle with returning college students, military members or others, the CDC is recommending that the hosts take added precautions: Gatherings should be outdoors if possible, with people keeping 6 feet apart and wearing masks and just one person serving the food. LAFOURCHE HIGH SCHOOLS TO MOVE TO A/B DAY SCHEDULE
Posted 11/19/20 – The Lafourche Parish School District today announced that high schools students will move to an A/B day schedule on November 30 due to concerns over the rising number of COVID-19 cases at our local high schools. This will be an amended A/B hybrid schedule which will allow students to attend every other day regardless of the day of the week, a change from the previous A/B day model. For example, an “A” student will attend class Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on one week, then Tuesday and Thursday the following week. They currently expect high schools to continue this model until the end of the third nine weeks period. Please visit the Lafourche Parish School District website for more information.
RESTRICTIONS TIGHTENING ACROSS U.S. AS COVID-19 SURGES
Posted 11/16/20 – The U.S. has had more than 11 million cases of COVID-19 so far, with more than one million coming in the last week alone. On Friday, there were 184,514 new cases – the most in a single day since the pandemic began. This surge has caused many states to tighten restrictions as caseloads soar. This all coming as the holiday season approaches where many families typically gather together in larger groups. While there have been no recent changes for Louisiana, state officials warned on Friday that restrictions could be coming if the numbers continue to rise in our state. We will keep you posted if any restrictions are reenacted in Louisiana.
THREE LAFOURCHE SCHOOLS GO VIRTUAL UNTIL NOVEMBER 30
Posted 11/16/20 – Last week, the Lafourche Parish School District announced that due to “multiple classroom cluster outbreaks of COVID-19,” South Lafourche High School would move to virtual learning through the Thanksgiving holidays, with in-person classes resuming on Monday, November 30. Then on Sunday, the same announcement was made for Central Lafourche High School and Lockport Upper Elementary School. This makes four times schools in Lafourche have had to close for COVID-19 outbreaks. W.S. Lafargue was closed for 14 days last month due to COVID-19.
CDC: WEARING MASKS PROTECTS YOU AS WELL AS OTHERS
Posted 11/16/20 – As most of you should be keenly aware, the CDC and government officials have asked people to wear masks because it protects others in case YOU have COVID-19 and don’t know it. Now, after more research has been conducted, they have determined that wearing cloth masks DOES provide some protection for the person wearing it as well. Certainly, a cloth mask will not provide the level of protection of an N95 mask, and those should still be worn when necessary per our protocols. This is just another reason for you and the public to comply with the statewide mask mandate because it will provide SOME protection for you as well as others. You can view the latest scientific brief from the CDC on this topic or view all CDC guidelines regarding masks HERE.

Hurricane Zeta is forecast to make landfall as a Category One storm somewhere along the northern Gulf Coast on Wednesday evening. Please stay weather-aware this week and watch for more information on these briefings or emails concerning any emergency activations, office closures, etc., should any be necessary. Ensure you have downloaded the LPSO mobile app, and enable notifications the first time you open the app. The next advisory from the National Hurricane Center will be issued at 4pm. Remember the public is ALWAYS watching, especially when you are in uniform. Regardless of your personal beliefs or political opinions about masks, all employees shall comply with this directive. Please refer to the aforementioned directive for more specifics. LOUISIANA TO REMAIN IN PHASE THREE
Posted 10/12/20 – On Friday, Governor Edwards announced Louisiana would stay in Phase 3 for another 28 days. This includes a statewide mask mandate will also remain place. The primary updates included in the new proclamation include the approval for alcohol to be sold at sporting events in parishes that qualified and opted in to reopen bars for on-site consumption of alcohol. Additionally, the Louisiana State Fire Marshal will issue guidance for fairs and festivals which will allow event organizers to submit a plan for approval, but no outdoor fair or festival shall have more than 500 people. For full details, including a link to the Phase Three proclamation itself, CLICK HERE.
STATUS ON LAFOURCHE BARS REOPENING
Posted 10/12/20 – As referenced above, part of the Phase 3 proclamation includes that bars must remain closed for on-site consumption, but parishes which show a low positivity rate (5% or less) over a two-week period can “opt in” to allow on-premises consumption while limited to 25% capacity and other restrictions. On September 30, Parish President Archie Chaisson sent a letter to the Governor requesting an exception for Lafourche Parish to allow bars to reopen despite our current positivity rate being at 5.6% – just above the threshold. That request was denied. New official numbers will be released this Wednesday, and parish officials are expected to “opt in” and allow bars to reopen when the positivity rate drops below 5%.

SHERIFF WEBRE ADDRESSES NIGHT OUT AGAINST CRIME
Posted 9/17/20 – Due to COVID-19, Sheriff Craig Webre announced today that LPSO would not be hosting or participating in events for National Night Out Against Crime which had been slated for October 6, 2020. In the release, Sheriff Webre said, “Given everything that has happened in 2020, we were all very much looking forward to this year’s event as a way to interact positively with our citizens. While we are disappointed, we do feel this decision is with everyone’s best interest in mind.” National Night Out has traditionally been held on the first Tuesday of August, but starting this year, Sheriff Webre had permanently moved the annual event to the first Tuesday in October to take advantage of cooler weather. In lieu of block parties, we will air a brief video on social media on October 6, 2020, thanking the community for their support. Please mark your calendars for next year’s event which will be October 5, 2021. You can view today’s news release HERE.
TWO MORE FESTIVALS CANCELED
Posted 9/17/20 – Due to COVID-19, two more local festivals have announced cancellations. La Fete Des Vieux Temps – typically held the first weekend of October in Raceland – has been canceled. Additionally, the Louisiana Gumbo Festival of Chackbay, originally scheduled for October 9-11, has been canceled. We had previously announced the cancellation of the Thibodeauxville Fall Festival and Big Boy Main Street Cook-off, and the Cut Off Youth Center Fair was postponed indefinitely. If you know of any other major event cancellations, please relay those to Lt. Brennan Matherne.
GOVERNOR PROVIDES DETAILS FOR PHASE THREE
Posted 9/11/20 – Today, Governor Edwards provided details of Phase Three of reopening from the COVID-19 pandemic which Louisiana will enter tonight. The order will last for 28 days, expiring October 9. As mentioned yesterday, the statewide mask mandate will remain in place. Notable changes include the following:
- Restaurants, churches, salons, spas, gyms, and other businesses will be allowed to open to up to 75% capacity while still adhering to social distancing measures.
- Sporting events, like college football games, will operate at a lesser capacity of 25 percent and without alcohol sales.
- Crowd sizes shall be limited to 50% capacity (250 person max) for all indoor and outdoor spaces.
- Bars will remain closed in Phase Three where positivity rate remains high, but parishes with a low positivity rate (5% or less) can “opt in” to allow on-premises consumption with table service only. Those bars will be limited to 25% capacity and no more than 50 people inside and no more than 50 outside. Everyone must be seated and there will be table service of drinks only. There will be no live music permitted. Also, no one under 21 will be allowed in bars, and all places must stop serving alcohol at 10 p.m.

LOUISIANA TO ENTER PHASE THREE FRIDAY
Posted 9/10/20 – Earlier today, Governor Edwards announced Louisiana would move into Phase Three of the White House COVID-19 guidance for reopening. Unlike previous ones, today’s announcement came with virtually no details on what exactly the new restrictions and guidelines would be. The Governor is planning to announce the details of Phase Three tomorrow. The only detail we do have is that the statewide mask mandate WILL REMAIN in effect. Governor Edwards did caution that moving into Phase Three does NOT mean the battle with COVID-19 is over, and Louisiana citizens should continue to take all precautionary measures to prevent the spread of sickness as we’ve been doing for months now. After details for Phase Three are announced, we will relay information to all employees if any changes affect LPSO operations in any way.

This is automatic and no application is required. The program is set to expire on December 31, 2020, or when funds are depleted.
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TO RETURN IN OCTOBER
Posted 9/10/20 – On Wednesday, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association announced the high school football season would start October 1-3. During games, there will be strict social distancing measures on the sidelines and players not in the game will have to wear masks. Stadium seating will also be restricted as LHSAA is recommending 50% capacity, but schools and school districts will make those final determinations. As indicated in today’s email from Mrs. Angie Guedry, we have already received some requests for off-duty details for the games. You can sign up on PowerDETAILS.
MONITORING THE TROPICS…
Posted 9/10/20 – As you know, COVID-19 has been ongoing as we continue to deal with threats of tropical weather. Today – September 10th – marks the climatological peak of what has been a VERY active Atlantic hurricane season. As of this email, the National Hurricane Center is tracking two named storms and four disturbances. The primary one of local concern is just east of The Bahamas and is forecast to move westward, crossing the Bahamas and Florida on Friday and moving into the eastern Gulf of Mexico over the weekend. Conditions are favorable for development. Regardless of development, it is expected to bring the threat of at least heavy rain and possible flooding into next week. Please keep an eye on the weather and monitor LPSO emails should the need for any emergency plans arise.

PHASE TWO EXTENDED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 11
Posted 9/3/20 – While we were dealing with the threats from Marco and Laura last week, Governor Edwards announced he would extend Phase Two of reopening for another two weeks – until September 11. All the same restrictions remain in place, and there are no changes from an operational standpoint at LPSO. Governor Edwards is expected to announce plans for beyond September 11 early next week. STATUS OF OFF-DUTY DETAILS FOR SCHOOL SPORTS
Posted 8/12/20 – The LHSAA has announced the high school football season will be postponed until at least October 8. That is predicated on Louisiana moving to Phase Three by the end of this month. Volleyball competitions will resume as soon as Phase Three begins. All other school sports have been allowed to start on time. The LHSAA has set specific guidelines and protocols for each sport (such as who can be on the field and sidelines), and each school administration may have additional restrictions. Detail supervisors will inform you of any such regulations for each detail assignment if relevant. In the event you are working a school detail alone, please check with a school administrator on site to ensure you are aware of any restrictions. PHASE TWO EXTENDED 21 DAYS
Posted 8/5/20 – Governor Edwards announced yesterday that he will sign an Executive Order this week extending Phase Two of reopening through August 28. REGULAR STUDENTS’ SCHEDULE
Posted 8/5/20 – For those parents who opted for their child to return to school in person, the first two weeks of school will be virtual learning. On August 10, teachers will post their first virtual lessons in Google classroom. Students will be expected to log in for lessons before the end of each day, though not at a specific given time. Then, on August 24, an A/B schedule will be enacted and will continue as long as the state is in Phase Two of reopening. Students will have virtual learning two days per week and report to school in person three days per week as follows:
- Group A (last name A-H): attend school on Monday, Wednesday, and every other Friday
- Group B (last name I-Z): attend school on Tuesday, Thursday, and every other Friday
NOTE: If the state is still in Phase Two by mid-September, the school district will develop a plan to have grades Pre-K up to possibly 3rd grade return to school 5 days a week by the end of September, but that plan has not yet been developed. Once the state moves to Phase Three, schools can return to a normal 5-day-per-week schedule for all grades.
STUDENTS OPTING FOR VIRTUAL LEARNING ONLY
Posted 8/5/20 – For those parents who opted for virtual learning only for the entire year, virtual lessons will begin on August 10. Like with regular students, virtual-learning students will be expected to log in for lessons before the end of each day, though not at a specific given time. Testing (assessments) will be done virtually as well through Google classroom.
GOOGLE CHROMEBOOKS
Posted 8/5/20 – Every student will need a computer/device for virtual learning. Those opting for virtual learning for the entire year may use their own computer OR obtain a Google Chromebook from their school. All other students MUST use a school-issued Google Chromebook due to having to bring it to school on A/B days. The Chromebooks will not come with a protective case, but parents may purchase one at their own expense. Each student will be expected to take care of his/her device.
MASK REQUIREMENTS
Posted 8/5/20 – Per state law, all students in grades 3 through 12 are REQUIRED to wear masks as much as possible while at school. Students in Pre-K through 2nd grade are strongly encouraged to wear masks. For students that are hearing impaired or taking speech therapy, clear masks will be available for use.

STATEWIDE MASK MANDATE EXTENDED TO AUGUST 7
Posted 7/28/20 – As you are likely aware by now, on Friday, July 24, Governor Edwards signed an extension to his Executive Order extending Phase Two of reopening until August 7, which includes statewide mandates on masks, bars, and gathering sizes. This means there are no changes to internal LPSO operations since the ones implemented by Sheriff Webre’s directive which was emailed to all employees on July 13. If you have not done so already, you can view that directive and sign off on it in PowerDMS. You can also view the Governor’s latest press release and the LPSO press release regarding the mask mandate.

Posted 7/28/20 – Having been closed since March due to COVID-19, the LPSO Shooting Range is set to reopen this week. The normal operating schedule will begin Wednesday, July 29, 8am to 5pm, opening to members only. The range will reopen to the public on Thursday, July 30. The range is open to members only on Wednesdays, and it is open to the general public on Thursday through Sunday. Pistol ranges will be limited to 6 persons to allow for proper physical distancing, and therefore, masks are not required on the shooting range itself. Masks are also not required on the 100-yard and 200-yard rifle ranges where existing physical barriers ensure proper spacing. All individuals entering the range office, however, MUST wear a mask. If you have any specific questions, please email Sgt. Danny Toups.

FDA EXPANDS LIST OF DANGEROUS HAND SANITIZERS
Posted 7/28/20 – The FDA continues to warn about certain alcohol-based hand sanitizers due to the presence of methanol, or wood alcohol – a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and life-threatening when ingested. Use of these products could lead to blindness, cardiac effects, effects on the central nervous system, hospitalizations, and even death. The FDA has taken action to stop imports of many products and is proactively working with manufacturers to recall products. You can view an up-to-date list here.
CDC FACT SHEETS FOR YOUNG ADULTS
Posted 7/28/20 – The number of young adults infected with COVID-19 is surging around the nation. While early reports from China indicated young people were more likely to have milder cases of the disease that view may be changing. Regardless, an infected young adult can potentially spread to family members who are more at risk of complications or even death. For those of you with children in their teens and 20s, the CDC has produced a series of factsheets which cover a variety of topics:
- Wear a Cloth Face Covering to Protect You and Your Friends
- Help Protect Yourself and Others from COVID-19
- What Your Test Results Mean
- Slow the Spread of COVID-19
- Do it for Yourself and Your Friends
- Stay Safe at the Pool/Beach
GOVERNOR’S PROCLAMATION: MASK MANDATE, BARS CLOSED
Posted 7/14/20 – As you are undoubtedly aware by now, Governor Edwards issued a new proclamation over the weekend which took effect on Monday, July 13. With that proclamation, masks are now required throughout the state of Louisiana. All bars are now limited to curbside delivery or drive-through and all social gatherings are limited to 50 people. The order requires face coverings for everyone ages 8+ with some exceptions (medical conditions, while consuming drink/food, when trying to communicate with the hearing impaired, etc.). For more detailed information, please see the Governor’s press release.
LPSO EXECUTIVE DIRECTIVE REGARDING MASKS
Posted 7/14/20 – On Monday, July 13, Sheriff Craig Webre issued an Executive Directive for all employees regarding the mask mandate and how it affects LPSO operations. Most notably, a mask or face covering is now MANDATORY while interacting with the public or when in a public space where social distancing is impractical. The directive specifies in detail the type of masks allowed, when to use them, and how to get masks. It also clarifies our role in the enforcement of the Governor’s proclamation and direction for you when communication with the public about the proclamation. It is imperative that you review this directive as soon as possible if you have not already done so. The directive, which was emailed to all employees Monday evening, is also available for review on PowerDMS. All employees must go to PowerDMS to sign off on this document. We would also encourage you to view our news release to the public on this topic.

DRIVE-THRU COVID-19 TESTS IN SCHRIEVER THIS WEEK
Posted 7/7/20 – Ochsner Health has announced drive-thru community COVID-19 testing will be conducted at Living Word Church (1916 LA 311, Schriever) on Wednesday, July 8 and Thursday, July 9 from 9am to 4pm. Testing is available for anyone ages 10 and up who wish to know their COVID-19 status. You must bring an ID and insurance card, but there are no out-of-pocket expenses. As we mentioned in a previous briefing, Sheriff Webre understands some of you may not be available to be tested outside of working hours for various reasons. If that is the case, please consult with your supervisor as Sheriff Webre will allow you to get tested, even if you must do so during working hours. Your supervisor will work out a time when appropriate for you to get tested. As always, if you are sick or have COVID-19 symptoms, please contact Personnel. For more information on this testing site, CLICK HERE.
HEALTH ADVISORY FOR METHANOL-BASED HAND SANITIZERS
Posted 7/7/20 – Last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advised consumers not to use any hand sanitizer manufactured by “Eskbiochem SA de CV” in Mexico due to the potential presence of methanol, a “toxic alcohol”, as an active ingredient, which can cause blindness and/or death when absorbed through the skin or when swallowed. Since then, FDA has identified additional products that contain methanol and is working with manufacturers and distributors on a voluntary recall of these products. Please note that most commercially available alcohol-based hand sanitizers contain either ethanol or isopropanol as active ingredients, not methanol. Also, none of the hand sanitizers distributed to LPSO employees for use contain methanol. This information is being distributed for sanitizer you may have personally purchased. For a full list of recalled products and more information, CLICK HERE.
LOUISIANA REMAINS IN “PHASE TWO” OF REOPENING
Posted 7/6/20 – Due to a resurgence in COVID-19 cases, we are renewing these employee briefings to ensure you are kept informed. For starters, we wanted to provide you with the statewide progress. Late last month, Governor Edwards officially extended Phase Two of re-opening for another 28 days due to an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations across the state. That would take us through July 23, 2020. There are rumors on social media regarding possible new restrictions or a move back to “Phase One” if the numbers continue to increase. For now, those are only rumors, but we will use these briefings to continue to keep you posted on the situation. For more detailed information on Phase Two in Louisiana, CLICK HERE.
TEST RESULTS DELAYED IN SOME CASES
Posted 7/6/20 – In recent weeks, there has been a resurgence in COVID-19 cases. With that, local urgent care centers and hospitals have seen a drastic increase in the number of people being tested with one urgent care center reporting a 600% increase in testing last week. This has led to a delay in people getting results. While some people have received results in 24-48 hours, others have waited 5-7 days, and there are some mobile labs around the state that are not getting results for 12-15 days. Remember, that if you are sick and think you may have COVID-19, you should contact the Personnel Office immediately. We will do our best to ensure we are obtaining results as quickly as possible. While awaiting results, though, it’s important for you to remain isolated from others.
STRONGER MASK RECOMMENDATIONS NATIONWIDE
Posted 7/6/20 – As time passes, science is improving on COVID-19 and with that, guidance has been evolving as well. Masks are a prominent example. While mask-wearing was discouraged at the outset, scientists have since learned that wearing masks may reduce the spread of the virus. Remember that by you wearing a mask, you are protecting others in case YOU have COVID-19 and are asymptomatic. Officials across the county, including Lafourche Parish, are pleading with people to wear masks or cloth face coverings in public. Some states have mandated wearing masks. While Louisiana has not required it yet, we encourage all of you to heed those all CDC recommendations whether at work or in your time off: wearing masks, keeping 6 feet of distance from others, disinfecting surfaces, and thoroughly washing hands for at least 20 seconds. Doing all these together – not just one or two – can greatly reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19. Remember to contact your supervisor if you are in need of personal protective equipment at work. For more information from the CDC about cloth face coverings, CLICK HERE.
ASSESSING RISK LEVELS OF ACTIVITIES
Posted 7/6/20 – As we all “learn to live” with COVID-19, one important aspect of everyday life is to assess risk levels based on certain activities. Risk is based on a variety of factors such as how likely you are to be within six feet of others and the length of time you will be indoors sharing that space with others who could be asymptomatic carriers of the virus. This chart was posted from a TV station in Florida – one of the hottest spots for the COVID-19 resurgence in the country. As you see, the larger the crowd and the more time you’d stay in the same place, especially indoors, the higher the risk. Please assess the risk of any activities you and your family are partaking in. When you opt to participate in a high-risk activity, please ensure you are taking all CDC recommendations seriously to avoid possible infection.
LOUISIANA TO MOVE TO “PHASE TWO” THIS FRIDAY
Posted 6/2/20 – Governor Edwards announced on Monday afternoon that Louisiana will move into “Phase Two” of re-opening this Friday, June 5. A new Executive Order is expected by Thursday and will become effective on Friday. Phase Two will allow businesses such as tattoo parlors, bars, bowling alleys, event centers, outdoor playgrounds, arcades, and trampoline parks to reopen at 25% capacity. Those businesses which were allowed to open at 25% capacity in Phase One will be able to move to 50% capacity in Phase Two including restaurants, gyms, barbershops, movie theaters, etc. Other establishments such as water parks, indoor play centers, and music halls will remain CLOSED in Phase Two. To read the Governor’s full news release on Phase Two, CLICK HERE.
LAFOURCHE ASSESSOR’S OFFICE REOPENS

RUMOR CONTROL: CONTACT TRACING APPS
Posted 5/28/20 – In a chain message being copied & pasted on Facebook, people are asking friends and family to delete them from their contacts before downloading the apps “Healthy Together” or “AB Trace Together.” The post claims the apps automatically read and track names of people in your contact list for COVID-19 without consent or knowledge. These claims are FALSE. First of all, legitimate apps cannot access any information on your phone without your consent. Secondly, the Healthy Together app is designed for the state of Utah, so the app is irrelevant for anyone else. The other app is only available in Canada. Finally, it’s worth noting that Apple and Google are both working on contact tracing apps which are expected to become part of your phone’s operating system, using anonymous Bluetooth data to see which devices have been near each other. Even our Governor has said cell phone data has been used to track social distancing, but Louisiana is not using a public app for contact tracing. The bottom line is these claims are false, but of course, your cell phone usage is being tracked – just not to the degree alleged in the post.
DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE REOPENS TO PUBLIC
Posted 5/26/20 – Lafourche Parish District Attorney Kristine Russell re-opened her offices in Thibodaux and Galliano today. The D.A.’s office announced to the public that all visitors are being encouraged to schedule an appointment, and anyone entering the office will be asked to wear a mask during this “PHASE ONE” of their reopening. No one will be allowed to wait in the lobby either. Those entering the office will receive instructions on where to wait. No purses or bags will be allowed in the building. Obviously, anyone who is sick, experiencing symptoms, or has come into contact with someone with symptoms in the past 14 days is asked to stay home and contact the office by phone. You can read the full press release HERE.
CRISIS COUNSELING TEXT LINE OPEN TO LOUISIANA RESIDENTS
Posted 5/26/20 – Governor Edwards recently announced a new crisis counseling text line is now available to provide free, confidential, 24/7 support for all Louisiana residents. Just text REACHOUT to 741741 to connect to a trained crisis counselor who will help individuals de-escalate, identify coping strategies, and who will use active listening techniques. This resource is available to provide additional options to connect and cope with stress, anxiety and other difficult situations as a result of COVID-19. These services are free, confidential and available 24/7.
RUMOR CONTROL: LEAVING HAND SANITIZER IN HOT VEHICLE
Posted 5/26/20 – Recently, a news story began making the rounds suggesting that hand sanitizer could ignite if left in a hot vehicle. The story was born from a social media post which was shared by a fire department in Wisconsin. As it turns out, the photograph used in the post was found to not even be from such an incident. Since then, many media outlets, fire experts, and fire departments – including our local ones – have debunked this claim. One expert said the temperature inside the car would need to reach over 700 degrees for this to occur. So, it *IS* safe to keep hand sanitizer in your vehicle. Now, there have been incidents where direct sunlight shining through a plastic bottle causes the light to be magnified and reflected onto a surface causing a burn, but even these are rare. If you have concerns about keeping a bottle of hand sanitizer in direct sunlight, though, you can certainly opt to keep it in your center console or glove box. To read more, here is an article from today’s USA TODAY.
COVID-19 TEST SITE TO CLOSE FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Posted 5/21/20 – According to Parish officials, the COVID-19 drive-through self-testing site at the LPSO Shooting Range will be CLOSED Saturday, May 23 through Monday, May 25. It will re-open on Tuesday, May 26.
ADDITIONAL ONE-DAY TESTING SITE LOCATIONS
Posted 5/21/20 – In addition to the drive-through testing site at the range, additional drive-through testing sites are opening for a single day of testing in various locations. Today – Thursday, May 21 – there will be a site open at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center from Noon to 7pm. On Tuesday, May 26, there will be a site open at Oakridge Park in Golden Meadow near the pavilion from 9am until noon. Then on Wednesday, May 27, there will be a site open at St. Charles Catholic Church on Highway 665 in Montegut from 9am until noon.
LAFOURCHE PARISH ACTIVATES DEBRIS REMOVAL CONTRACT
Posted 5/21/20 – Today, Parish President Archie Chaisson activated a debris removal contract to bring in additional resources for the collection of bulky waste debris throughout Lafourche Parish. Due to COVID-19 stay-at-home orders in combination with recent severe weather events, the volume of residential solid waste has increased substantially. River Birch Renewable Energy, the parish’s solid waste service provider, and DRC Emergency Services will partner to collect and remove debris as quickly as possible. What does this mean for residents? Residents should continue to place as much solid waste and debris into the parish-issued trash cans as possible, but it means that other debris placed at the roadside OUTSIDE those trash cans will also be picked up, just not necessarily on the same day as regular garbage pickup.
RUMOR CONTROL: CDC GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOLS
Posted 5/21/20 – There is a graphic circulating on social media which shows some of the highlights of the CDC’s guidelines for returning to school, said to be part of this document from the CDC. First of all, the graphic itself is NOT official and omits wording from the document that utterly changes the meaning of most items. Secondly, it is important to note that the document is “guidance” (things you SHOULD do) from the CDC. State and local school districts will ultimately decide on “policy” (things you MUST do). Finally, and most importantly, this guidance may be radically different by August anyway when children actually return to school. Just in the past three months, we have seen the CDC radically alter guidance on numerous topics. For example, masks were initially discouraged, but now, masks are strongly encouraged. Also, yesterday, the CDC updated its guidance, saying the virus may not be as easily spread on surfaces as once thought. The takeaway here is it’s important for you to understand that the world is dealing with a new virus that science is still trying to understand. As time passes, science will improve, and guidance will change. There is no reason to get caught up in worrying about “guidance” that we have no control over and may be moot in three months anyway.
LPSO PHASE ONE RE-OPENING MEASURES
Posted 5/17/20 – Beginning on Monday, May 18, LPSO lobbies will be unlocked and reopen to the public, but we are still encouraging residents to conduct business by phone, email, website, or LPSO app. Anyone entering an LPSO office must physically distance themselves, will be asked to use hand sanitizer, and may have to submit to a temperature check or be asked to wear a mask. There will be no changes to operations at the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex at this time, and so all enacted restrictions will remain in place. The Shooting Range also remains closed due to the COVID-19 testing site still in operation. All this information and more was released to the public via a NEWS RELEASE on Friday, as well as a video address from Sheriff Webre which you can VIEW HERE.
17TH JUDICIAL DISTRICT COURT RESUMES MONDAY

On Monday, May 18, the site will resume normal hours of operation of 8am until noon. Anyone can be tested with or without symptoms. Testing is free, and no insurance is required. REMINDER: As an LPSO employee, you should still follow all protocols for reporting sickness and symptoms so that we can arrange for expedited testing in those circumstances.
WEDNESDAY TIME CHANGE FOR RACELAND SELF-TEST SITE
Posted 5/12/20 – The COVID-19 self-testing site at the LPSO Shooting Range in Raceland will operate from 3pm to 7pm on Wednesday, May 13. This is an idea Sheriff Webre encouraged for members of the public who may not be able to get tested during the daily 8am-noon time frame. Based on the public response to this time frame, the parish may decide to keep the new time frame on Wednesdays moving forward. The site is normally open to the public (ages 18+) 7 days a week from 8am until noon or until the testing limit has been reached for that day. Anyone can be tested with or without symptoms. Testing is free, and no insurance is required. REMINDER: As an LPSO employee, you should still follow all protocols for reporting sickness and symptoms so that we can arrange for expedited testing in those circumstances.

GOVERNOR: MASKS STILL ENCOURAGED IN PHASE ONE
Posted 5/12/20 – Yesterday, Governor Edwards announced that this Friday Louisiana would move to PHASE ONE of re-opening and the Stay at Home would be lifted. You can CLICK HERE for more details on that. Even in Phase One, social distancing from people outside your immediate family will still be paramount in helping control the spread of COVID-19. Even while practicing social distancing, Louisiana residents will still be asked to wear a mask or cloth face covering in public to help protect others in case you are infected with COVID-19 but are not showing symptoms. Below is a graphic of the public guidance from the Governor’s Office, and you can access detailed masking guidance from the CDC HERE. Again, if you are need of any PPE for use while at work, please contact your supervisor.

Posted 5/7/20 – Due to COVID-19 and the phased reopening of the Parish, State, and Nation, all Lafourche Parish sponsored summer recreation programs have been canceled. Parish President Chaisson cited the safety of children and staff being paramount in his decision, as well as not knowing which phase the state will be in by June 1. The parish also said individual recreation districts will make their own decisions about allowing league play on their fields, while following CDC and State Fire Marshal social distancing guidelines.
SELF-TESTING SITE AT THE RANGE CLOSED THIS WEEKEND
Posted 5/7/20 – In observance of Mother’s Day weekend, the COVID-19 testing site at the LPSO Shooting Range in Raceland will be CLOSED this Saturday and Sunday, May 9-10. The site will reopen on its 7-day per week schedule on Monday, May 11 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. or until test capacity is met. As a reminder, testing is open to adults 18+. POLL: FREE, VOLUNTARY COVID-19 TESTING FOR LPSO
Posted 5/4/20 – LPSO is evaluating the possibility of offering free, voluntary COVID-19 testing for all employees. The testing would be a blood antibody test to determine if you were previously infected with COVID-19, and it would also show whether you currently have it. Please note these tests would only provide the status of your condition at the time of the test, and antibodies don’t appear for 1-3 weeks after infection. If you test positive for antibodies, it does not guarantee that you are immune to catching COVID-19 again. With both tests, it is possible to get a false “negative” result, whereas a positive result is much more conclusive. We are polling employees in order to gauge interest in such testing. The poll is only one question and will just take a moment of your time. TAKE THE POLL
REMINDER: FREE TESTING AVAILABLE AT THE RANGE SITE
Posted 5/4/20 – Regardless of what we decide regarding antibody testing, we want to remind you that standard viral testing is currently available FREE to everyone at the LPSO Shooting Range. As an LPSO employee, you should still follow all protocols for reporting sickness and symptoms so that we can arrange for expedited testing in those circumstances. But if you do NOT have symptoms and are interested in getting tested, the self-testing site at our shooting range is available for free. Remember this is a swab self-test and will only tell you whether you currently are infected with COVID-19. The crowds are much lighter now than when the site initially opened, so we encourage all who are interested to go to the site. It’s open 7 days a week beginning at 8am until noon.

In Lafourche, all non-essential businesses can open with 10 people or less inside, except those expressly prohibited by the Governor. All employees are reminded that social distancing measures are still in place in the workplace and the PPE is here. Be sure to use it appropriately.
LPSO LOBBIES TO REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL MAY 15
Posted 4/30/20 – For the past several weeks, we have locked our lobby doors during office hours, using intercoms and phones to conduct business with residents to limit the number of people coming inside to a bare minimum. With the Governor extending the Stay at Home order until Friday, May 15, Sheriff Webre to maintain those procedures until then. Tentatively, we would plan to re-open the lobbies after the order has expired. We will keep you posted.

You can view the Executive Order HERE and the Parish’s news release on it HERE.
MAINTAINING CERTIFICATIONS
Posted 4/29/20 – As you should now be aware, re-certs for both April and May were postponed due to COVID-19. The Louisiana P.O.S.T. Council has strict guidelines on maintaining P.O.S.T. certification. During this crisis, however, those guidelines have been relaxed due to the Governor’s Executive Orders. We will be given a grace period to complete training as soon as the Governor’s orders allow. Some deputies, like those assigned to the K-9 section, continue to train 16 hours per month to be prepared to recertify when they can. When we can begin re-certs again, the Training Academy will announce the new re-certs schedule to help you get back on track. That’s just another reason to be sure to check your LPSO email each day.
DRIVE-THRU TESTING SITE TO RE-OPEN THURSDAY
Posted 4/29/20 – The drive-thru COVID-19 self-testing site at the LPSO Shooting Range in Raceland was closed today due to inclement weather. The site is scheduled to re-open and resume normal operations tomorrow – Thursday, April 30. As a reminder, the site is open 7 days a week from 8am until noon or until the test limit has been reached each day. Any citizen can get tested. Individuals will be required to perform a nasal swab on themselves. Remember that all LPSO employees should continue to follow proper protocol for reporting sickness or symptoms, and LPSO will arrange for expedited testing for you when appropriate.
GOV. EDWARDS EXTENDS STAY AT HOME ORDER TO MAY 15
Posted 4/28/20 – During a press conference on Monday, Gov. Edwards announced he will extend the Stay at Home Order until May 15 because Louisiana does not meet the White House criteria for entering Phase One of re-opening. Businesses that previously were directed to be closed will remain closed (including salons, barbershops, bars, casinos, etc.). Essential businesses can remain open. The Governor also added that non-essential retail businesses may continue to open with fewer than 10 people total inside.
CHANGES COMING WITH NEW STAY AT HOME ORDER
Posted 4/28/20 – While most things will remain the same, there are three major changes coming with Friday’s new order. 1) Malls must remain closed to the public, but the stores may open for curbside delivery. 2) Restaurants can open outside areas for dining without tableside service. Patrons must still order takeout but may eat on-site in outside areas. 3) All employees having contact with the public must wear a mask. Obviously, this third and final change is the one that could most affect our operations. We will be discussing this internally and looking at the Governor’s Executive Order once it is issued to determine what further requirements we may need to meet. To view the Governor’s news release following his press conference yesterday, CLICK HERE.
VACATION & COMP TIME

Additional stipulations apply for the facility itself. The previous order allowed surgeries only for emergency medical conditions. For more information, CLICK HERE.

MAY RE-CERTS
Posted 4/24/20 – May re-certs have been postponed until further notice. No determination has been made regarding re-certs for April, May or beyond. We will duly inform all affected employees once those determinations are made. For those whose POST Firearm certifications expire in April, those expiration dates were extended to May, and we expect further guidance to come soon on all firearm re-certifications set to expire in May. We will keep you informed.
GARBAGE GUIDANCE: SPRING CLEANING & EXTRA DEBRIS
Posted 4/24/20 – While people have been staying at home, they’ve been getting a lot of Spring cleaning done. Some have even been remodeling or tackling those home DIY projects that have been long overdue. With all that comes increased levels of garbage at your residence. Lafourche Parish Government issued a reminder on guidance for disposing of such garbage. We encourage all of you to read it as their new garbage contract calls for very different protocols then you may be aware. You can view that news release HERE.
“STAY AT HOME” ORDERS CAN MEAN DANGER FOR D.V. VICTIMS
Posted 4/24/20 – While current social distancing measures can lead to boredom and loneliness for some, it can be downright dangerous for victims of domestic violence. Those individuals have fewer opportunities to reach out for help and may no longer have the eight hours at work, shopping trips, etc. to provide some measure of safety. Hotlines and advocates around the world are reporting increases in domestic violence calls. In Lafourche Parish, DV calls are up nearly 20%, and that doesn’t count the people who may be calling in for information. In China, cries for help have tripled. We’ve continued to see officers killed in the line of duty responding to DV calls including recently an officer in Indianapolis and the shooting spree that killed 23 in Canada, including a Mountie, started as a DV call.
What can we do? We can make sure we get the message out to victims that you’re not required to shelter in a place that isn’t safe. If you’re not sure how to advise someone about safety planning and how that works – contact Police Social Services for more information. PSS has alternatives available. Be sure to note in your report if a suspect has threatened to infect the victim with COVID-19. Your reports are more important than ever, with decisions being made to release some individuals from jail over others, documenting the dangers involved in a DV case is crucial. To be sure your report is thorough, you are reminded to use the Domestic Violence Investigative Checklist which can be found in PUBLIC FOLDER -> LPSO FORMS -> SUPPORT SERVICES.
Children don’t have those 8 hours of safety at school right now so be sure to give any child you come across in a DV case a bit of extra attention. Take them aside if possible and remind them of a few things to keep them safe: not to get trapped in a small room, not to get in between two warring parents, run to a neighbor if necessary and always view police as people who can help. People who are normally “mandated reporters,” like teachers, are not exposed to others every day.
Remember, by resolving a domestic issue, you can actually be preventing a homicide. Look for signs of felony crimes such as sexual assault, child abuse or animal abuse. There is a stalking and harassment assessment and risk profile (SHARP) available to victims on line. It provides information about stalking risks and safety suggestions. At the end of the assessment, it gives the victim a report they can print out for themselves. You can also go in and do a “test” assessment to see how it works. Some jurisdictions are also encouraging victims who may not be able to leave the house to post a sign on social media or during video calls with family or friends. The sign is simply folding your four fingers over your thumb (as pictured).
NEW PHISHING SCHEMES
Posted 4/24/20 – The cyber schemers are getting better at spelling and instead of hiding behind a fake Nigerian company, they’re now posing as officials you just might want to help. Don’t! No government agency is going to contact you directly for donations of phone cards or other such items. These cybercriminals are trying to use requests for donations, updates on virus transmissions, safety measures, tax refunds and fake vaccines to steal from you. The following is an example of a “phishy” email to warn your friends and family about:
TASC REIMBURSEMENT FOR OTC DRUGS
Posted 4/23/20 – As you know, Sheriff Webre provides all full-time employees with Health Reimbursement Accounts associated with our health care coverage. There were some major changes to eligible expenses as part of the CARES act signed last month. You can now submit your expenses for over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and medicines as well as menstrual care products. That reimbursement is retroactive to January 1, 2020. If you paid out of pocket for any of these items since then, you may request reimbursement online. More information is available on the TASC website.
EXTREMIST THREAT STILL A FOCUS OF NATIONAL ATTENTION
Posted 4/23/20 – While social distancing makes gatherings of large groups nearly impossible, government officials remind us that extremist groups and terrorists determined on carrying out violence will still try to find a way. The FBI recently stopped a plot to bomb a Missouri hospital. The suspect had been planning the attack for a while but accelerated plans as a result of the pandemic. Homeland Security reminds us that potential public gathering places that could be targets of violence have now shifted so it is important to remember if you see something curious or suspicious, say something.
VIDEO: FOR YOU… FOR US… TOGETHER… #LAFOURCHESTRONG
Posted 4/23/20 – Last week, we teamed with Parish Government and the District Attorney’s Office in promoting the hashtag #LafourcheStrong – asking residents to use the hashtag with any positive or uplifting social media posts. Today, we shared a video promoting unity and highlighting some of the changes we are all enduring during this pandemic. The video was shot and edited by Deputy Justin Benoit of the Social Media Team.
CLOTH MASK GIVEAWAY FOR THE PUBLIC
Posted 4/23/20 – Over the past few days, there have been stronger messages from local and state governments urging people to wear a mask (cloth face covering) anytime you go out in public. This Saturday, April 25, Lafourche Parish Government and local fire departments will be distributing free cloth face masks to the public donated by the Haynes Corporation. The masks will be distributed at six locations from 10am to 1pm or until supply runs out. Each vehicle will be given one pack containing five masks. The masks are washable and can be reused. Here is a graphic with all six distribution sites (click to enlarge):
NEW HOURS FOR LAFOURCHE ESSENTIAL BUSINESSES
Posted 4/21/20 – Parish President Archie Chaisson has announced that beginning Wednesday, April 22, all essential businesses may begin operating between the hours of 5am and 10pm daily. This is an update from the previous order which allowed businesses to operate from 6am to 7pm and restaurants to stay open until 10pm. As a reminder, pharmacies (drive-thru only) may remain open 24 hours and the rear entrances of truck stops may remain open for truckers (but front convenience store must close by 10pm).

For breakfast, you can choose from an Egg McMuffin, Bacon-Egg-Cheese Biscuit, or a Chicken McGriddles sandwich with any size soft drink, tea or hot coffee as well as a hash brown. For lunch and dinner, you can choose from a Double Cheeseburger, 6-Piece McNuggets, or Filet-O-Fish with any size soft drink, tea or hot coffee as well as a small order of fries.
COMMUNITY STEPS TO PROTECT US
Posted 4/21/20 – On social media, we recently highlighted a Larose woman and a local group who generously donated face masks for the men and women of LPSO (see pic below). Did you know about the other Louisiana companies that have retooled to keep us safe? Cajun Spirits Distillery in New Orleans is now pumping out hand sanitizer as is a Lafayette coffee company called Mello Joy. Gator Millworks in Denham Springs, that specializes in custom cabinetry, is now making face shields to save lives.
NO LPSO EMPLOYEES CURRENTLY OUT DUE TO COVID-19
Posted 4/17/20 – During an interview with the House of Prayer church in Thibodaux live on Facebook this morning, Sheriff Webre shared the good news that NO employee is currently out with COVID-19 symptoms! He also shared that three employees had tested positive, but all have since recovered and returned to work. This is evidence that we are doing a great job of protecting ourselves and our co-workers! Let’s continue our efforts! To watch the whole interview, CLICK HERE. You do NOT need a Facebook account to view the video.
PRESIDENT’S PLAN TO RE-OPEN THE COUNTRY
Posted 4/17/20 – On Thursday, President Trump unveiled his plan for “Opening Up America Again.” This plan acts as a guideline for governors for a slow progression to lift restrictions that have been instituted. There is no timeline, and the plan can be amended as each governor sees fit, so this is just informational, but we wanted to keep you informed. Governor Edwards can use this as a guide to help decide what restrictions to lift or maintain when he inevitably issues a new order to take effect when this current order expires at the end of this month. You can view the President’s guidelines on the White House website HERE.

Today’s video is brief and focuses on officer safety.
PHOTOS/VIDEOS FOR LPSO SOCIAL MEDIA
Posted 4/16/20 – Thanks to everyone who is submitting pictures, videos or ideas for use on LPSO social media. Keep in mind we are being VERY particular and careful about what we post. After all, we are in a State of Emergency. For example, we cannot use any pics/videos that show us NOT practicing social distancing. If you are taking a pic of more than one person, be everyone is standing at least 6 feet apart, and try not to have more than 3 people in any picture regardless. Please keep this in mind for any pictures/videos – even ones you post to your own personal social media profiles. We’d prefer not to see employees on social media not practicing social distancing with others, especially in uniform. Thanks, and please continue to send pictures, videos and ideas for social media to Lt. Brennan Matherne at brennan-matherne@lpso.net.

Effective TODAY, April 15, restaurants can serve carryout, drive-through, and delivery until 10pm. All other restrictions from his original order remain in place. You can view the latest release HERE.

17th JUDICIAL DISTRICT COURT EXTENDS ORDERS
Posted 4/13/20 – The current order in place this week for 17th Judicial District Court has been extended through May 1. That means all civil, criminal, and juvenile matters involving citizens that are not incarcerated are continued with notices to be issued soon. Courts will also handle magistrates, bonds, and arraignments via audio/visual methods for incarcerated individuals.
PROTECTING YOUR CREDIT
Posted 4/13/20 – While you’re hard at work, so are criminals who want to go on a shopping spree in your name! You may already be signed up for some form of credit protection with one of your credit card companies. This service is often complimentary and alerts you when a potential creditor reaches out to the credit reporting bureaus to do a credit check. If you don’t have such a service, you may want to consider locking or freezing your credit file if your information is compromised.
Louisiana Revised Statute 9:3571.1 outlines your rights to credit reporting agency information and reports and access to your credit file. If you’re not already doing it, this law gives you the right to get your credit report FREE once a year, from each of the credit reporting companies. It also gives you the right to take action to protect your credit by “locking” or “freezing” your credit file so no one else can try to apply for credit in your name.
“Locking” and “freezing” are two separate things. “Locking” blocks creditors from getting to your credit report, usually goes into effect right away but can take up to 48 hours, you can generally unlock immediately but the process is not governed by law and you could be charged a fee.
“Freezing” also prevents creditors from getting to your credit file, can take up to 5 days to take effect and up to 3 days to “unfreeze”, La. R.S. 9:3571.1 covers “freezing”, and it is FREE with all three credit reporting companies. In Louisiana, once you “freeze” your credit file, it stays in effect until you remove it. But remember, if you “lock” or “freeze” your credit file, you will have to remove the protection before you can apply for credit.
Another option is to sign up for a fraud alert. It’s valid for one year and notifies lenders to call you to verify your identity before they give you credit. It adds an extra step that will only cause headaches for the criminal. You only have to alert one of the credit bureaus to put a fraud alert in place – they’ll reach out to the other two for you and again, this option is FREE. To find out more about how to protect your credit, here is the contact information for all three credit bureaus:
- Equifax: 1-800-685-1111 or https://www.equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services/
- TransUnion 1-888-909-8872 or https://www.transunion.com/credit-freeze/place-credit-freeze
- Experian 1-888-397-3742 or https://www.experian.com/freeze/center.html

PROPER USE OF MASKS
Posted 4/9/20 – Our Senior Staff is working constantly to ensure all essential staff with the most potential for exposure to COVID-19 are have proper personal protective equipment such as masks and face shields. But do you know when to wear the issued N-95 mask versus when to use a surgical or cloth face covering? The N-95 masks issued to Patrol and Corrections staff, in particular, are meant to protect the wearer against exposure to the virus. Conversely, the CDC is now encouraging the general public to wear a cloth face covering or surgical mask in public to prevent them from potentially passing along the virus. This is because even if you’re showing no symptoms, you could still have it and could pass it on to others. Also, there have been reports that it could be passed on from coughs and sneezes, possibly even breathing. For more information about masks, here’s a link to the CDC about cloth face coverings which can also be easily made at home.
COVID-19 NUMBERS
Posted 4/9/20 – We will no longer include the COVID-19 numbers in red at the top of these briefings. Those are the numbers reported by the state, and we’ve found some substantial discrepancies in the numbers. We are reporting those to the state to ensure they are corrected. At this point, the number of cases is somewhat trivial because COVID-19 is in all parts of the parish and everyone should continue practicing all preventative measures. The deaths are the important number, and we don’t want to post an inaccurate number of deaths. With that said, if you would like to personally keep up with that state’s public numbers, you can do so HERE.
PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY THIS EASTER
Posted 4/9/20 – A CDC study found that a funeral and birthday party in Chicago, held before the strong recommendation for social distancing, likely helped spread the COVID-19 in a cluster of cases. The study found 16 cases were tied to those people coming in contact with just one person. While our traditions are turned upside down this Easter, keep those traditions alive for the future by keeping the family circle small. Save the big get-togethers for later. Try video calls or video conferencing to connect with family. If you have not done so, please watch the latest edition of The Sheriff Said (in PowerDMS) for Sheriff Webre’s Easter message.
SCAMMERS GEARING UP FOR STIMULUS CHECKS
Posted 4/9/20 – The ink wasn’t dry on the announcement that Congress would be sending money to help Americans through the COVID-19 outbreak, and the criminals went to work. The crooks are using emails, text messages, robocalls and other platforms to try to acquire personal information including social security numbers, bank account numbers, email addresses, and passwords. The “attack” text example contained the victim’s real name making it look legitimate. Official information about your stimulus payment will NOT be sent via text or another messaging platform. This illegal activity like this to increase as the money begins to flow from Washington. The messages will always try to redirect the victim to a link or website that is firmly in the criminal’s control telling they have to “apply” or enter information to be eligible. Notify your supervisor if you or anyone you know is a target of such a scam. Click the thumbnail to see examples.
NEW LAFOURCHE PARISH EXECUTIVE ORDER
Posted 4/7/20 – We previously reported that the Parish President implemented new restrictions. Today, he made his Executive Order public. While not much has changed, he did provide some clarification. For example, ALL stores that have been allowed to remain open must operate between the hours of 6am and 7pm. The only exceptions are 24-hour pharmacies (drive-thru only) and the rear entrances of truck stops may remain open for truckers (but front convenience store must close). You can view the FULL Executive Order HERE.
DISINFECTING YOUR TASER
Posted 4/7/20 – Axon is the latest manufacturer to issue specific guidelines about disinfecting Tasers and product accessories in light of COVID-19. Current evidence suggests that the virus may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. Again, as a general rule, you can use the disinfectant spray provided sprayed lightly on a cloth or paper towel to clean your Taser and related equipment.
The manufacturer recommends regular cleaning and disinfecting of Taser equipment and absolute guidelines to disinfect following possible exposure to the coronavirus. The following products have been tested by Axon and found to have no negative effects on the plastic, rubber, metal, and glass materials of Taser products: Chlorox® Disinfecting Wipes and Lysol® Multi-Surface Cleaner.
When cleaning and disinfecting, Tasers should be placed on “safe” and all live cartridges removed and wiped separately. Use caution when disinfecting the cartridges, pointing the cartridge in a safe direction. Axon recommends the wipes because they’re easy to use, however, a cloth or paper towel dampened with an approved disinfectant will work just as well. Do NOT use alcohol-based products on the Taser camera because it could damage the housing. Equipment should be wiped but not immersed or soaked because you don’t want moisture seeping into the device. Wipe any residual solution from the device with a cloth dampened with clean water. Allow the device to dry completely before use and allow Taser cartridges to dry before reinserting them into the Taser. The dry time will vary depending on the humidity and airflow around the device.
As a general rule, probes that have penetrated a body should always be treated as contaminated needles (biohazard), regardless of whether the person is suspected of being infected with COVID-19 or not. During and after probe removal from a subject, follow Agency policy and procedure for handling biohazards. If you’re not sure, ask your supervisor.
FIREHOUSE SUBS DISCOUNT
Posted 4/7/20 – Firehouse Subs in Thibodaux is offering a 25% discount to law enforcement for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. We appreciate the sentiments and encourage all employees to be mindful of Firehouse Subs’ generosity by limiting their discounted meal to one per deputy per day. Please be prepared to show your commission/badge.
BIG LOTS DISCOUNT
Posted 4/7/20 – Big Lots in Thibodaux is offering a 15% discount for all law enforcement officers. While many people continue to shop at the popular big box stores, you might find that Big Lots is carrying items that are sold out in other places. Please be prepared to show your commission/badge.
DISINFECTING LAW ENFORCEMENT GEAR
Posted 4/6/20 – Generally, we encourage all employees to disinfect equipment, such as duty gear, often with the disinfectant spray we have provided to you. With that said, you should use the manufacturer’s guides on care for each specific item as not all items are created the same. Furthermore, some manufacturers may have specific guides for their products. We have found COVID-19 flyers for these items: Safariland Armor Products | Safariland Communications Products | Hatch Products
IS THERE ANY RELIEF FOR STUDENT LOANS?
Posted 4/6/20 – Yes. The CARES Act automatically suspended payments for any student loan held by the federal government, from March 13 to September 30. There are steps you can take to proactively see if your loan qualifies and what do to. The New York Times issued a comprehensive Q&A about the CARES Act which includes information on student loans in addition to topics like stimulus payments, unemployment benefits, among others. Here is a direct link to the “student loans” section: LINK.
BE WARY OF ONLINE CHILD PREDATORS
Posted 4/6/20 – With school closures due to COVID-19, there has been a substantial increase in the amount of time our children are spending online. The increased unfettered access has led to amplified opportunities for online child predators. 1) Communicate with your children the importance of healthy online activity. 2) Look for changes in your child’s behavior. 3) Familiarize yourself with the applications your children are using and verify your child knows who they are communicating with. 4) Research online monitoring applications to determine if these platforms would allow you to better monitor your child’s online activity across multiple platforms.
CTS & OFF-DUTY DETAILS
Posted 4/4/20 – In an effort to limit contact with the public unless absolutely necessary, the Comprehensive Traffic Safety (CTS) program has been suspended. This is in the interest of protecting YOU as well as the public. In addition to this, many details have been canceled due to the cancellation of so many events. We understand many deputies rely on these assignments to supplement income. As a first responder, you are “essential” and will continue to receive your standard paycheck unlike so many in our community who have lost wages or lost their jobs altogether. Additionally, the stimulus payments will be doled out in the near future, so help is on the way. In the meantime, we will continue to work with area businesses to see if any details can be added.
WILL WE GET HAZARD PAY?
Posted 4/4/20 – One question the Sheriff has received is about whether we will receive hazard pay during this COVID-19 pandemic. Please note there is no law or anything in our policy to issue hazard pay. With that said, if anything becomes available at the state or federal level, we will do everything in our power to ensure you receive it. At this time, however, there is no provision enacted to provide hazard pay for law enforcement.
FLUCTUATION IN LAFOURCHE COVID-19 NUMBERS
Posted 4/3/20 – The numbers in red at the top of our briefings are pulled directly from the LA Dept. of Health website. In today’s update, the number of cases increased to 185 while the deaths decreased to 3. As cases/deaths are reported, the state does not always get the parish of origin correct, and you may see these numbers fluctuate like this. We do not know the reason for today’s specific fluctuation. These numbers are available to the public and are updated daily at noon at this link: http://www.ldh.la.gov/Coronavirus.
NEW LAFOURCHE PARISH RESTRICTIONS
Posted 4/3/20 – During a joint press conference with Sheriff Webre, Parish President Chaisson, District Attorney Russell, new restrictions were announced for Lafourche Parish. Primarily, this order further restricts places of business in order to help fight the spread of COVID-19. You can view the press release from Lafourche Parish Government HERE, you can view the press conference here.
GOVERNOR SIGNS STAY AT HOME ORDER EXTENSION
Posted 4/3/20 – On Thursday evening, Gov. Edwards officially signed an order to extend his “Stay at Home” order through April 30, in alignment with guidance from President Trump and the CDC. This basically extended all current orders in effect through April 30, including the closure of K-12 schools. With that said, education officials are still in discussions to decide what to do AFTER April 30, and that decision is expected by early next week, if not sooner. To read the Governor’s press release, including a link to the official order document, CLICK HERE.
GROOMING STANDARDS
Posted 4/3/20 – With all barber shops and salons closed, Sheriff Webre understands that employees may begin to struggle in adhering to grooming standards as it relates to haircuts. Under these circumstances, we are asking employees simply to maintain the grooming standards as it pertains to your hair as best as possible. With that said, all other grooming standards must be followed per policy.
EMPLOYEE TESTING FOR COVID-19
Posted 4/2/20 – We have streamlined the process to ensure our employees are tested as necessary for COVID-19 in a timely fashion. We are assured test results will be expedited. Please check your email for the Executive Directive issued yesterday for more details. If you have any questions about paid leave time, please call the Personnel Division.
WHY DON’T WE TEST ALL EMPLOYEES?
Posted 4/2/20 – We appreciate all the questions and suggestions made through our feedback site at LPSO.net/MyCorona. One common question is why we are not testing ALL employees. First, the Sheriff’s Office does not have a supply of COVID-19 tests. Those are under the control of medical professionals who ultimately decide who will be tested. There are still a limited number of tests. While we have streamlined our process, we ensure people are tested who are sick to prove whether they are positive for the virus. We don’t try to get people tested to prove a negative, or that they don’t have it. All testing is governed by medical protocols, and testing people who are not sick would be wasting a very precious resource.
WHY IS THERE NO CURFEW IN LAFOURCHE PARISH?
Posted 4/2/20 – This is perhaps the hottest topic on social media at this time as we are seeing so many parishes around the state institute curfews due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the Governor has given Sheriff Webre the authority to enact a curfew, he has NOT opted to do so at this time for many reasons. The Sheriff has highlighted some of those reasons in a video we released publicly today:
HOW WILL MY STIMULUS CHECK AFFECT MY TAXES?
Posted 4/1/20 – The short answer: It won’t. You don’t have to pay taxes on this money because the stimulus payments are actually tax credits for the 2020 tax year which are being fronted to you. Therefore, you will not have to pay taxes on this money, and it will not affect your refund next year.
THE SHERIFF SAID: EMPLOYEE FEEDBACK WANTED
Posted 4/1/20 – In the latest edition of “The Sheriff Said,” Sheriff Webre asks for feedback from employees on our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Feedback can be submitted at www.LPSO.net/MyCorona, and this link is intended for LPSO employees only. The video has been assigned to you to watch in PowerDMS and takes about 3 minutes. The sitekey is lpso1, and you can contact Lesley Hill if you have trouble logging in.

RUMOR CONTROL: DHS/NATIONAL GUARD
Posted 4/1/20 – Once again, we have rumors going around social media about national guard deployment and a national quarantine. There is a distorted photo of a flyer with no date calling for a national quarantine in 48-72 hours. Some people claim it’s legit because it has a large National Guard logo on it. It’s not. The information is FALSE. There is NO national quarantine, and the Department of Homeland Security CANNOT mobilize the National Guard.
GOVERNOR TO EXTEND STAY AT HOME ORDER THROUGH APRIL 30
Posted 3/31/20 – During his press conference on Monday, Governor Edwards announced that he would be extending his current “Stay at Home” order through April 30, in line with President Trump’s guidance issued on Sunday. He said the extension order (with specifics) would come out by the end of this week. This will obviously impact everyone, especially K-12 schools which were set to return on April 13. The Governor indicated that state education officials are currently discussing the next step for schools, and we expect that information this week as well. We will be sure to break down the Governor’s new order for you once it’s issued.
COVID-19 SCAMS RAMPING UP
Posted 3/31/20 – Sheriff Webre put out a news release on Monday cautioning residents about scams relating to COVID-19. With people losing their jobs/income and with incoming checks from the government, there are plenty of opportunities scam artists might pursue to take advantage of people. You or your family could easily be targeted for such a scam. Please review the news release HERE.

HONORING FALLEN OFFICERS DURING COVID-19
Posted 3/29/20 – We’ve already heard of numerous police officers throughout the country who have tested positive for COVID-19, and sadly, some have even died from the virus. In many states, bans on public gatherings mean first responder memorials, viewings, graveside services, and military honors are not allowed. In-person activities for National Police Week in May have already been canceled. Consider going to the Officer Down Memorial page and sending a card or note of condolence to those first responders who we lose during this situation.
TRUMP SIGNS $2 TRILLION CARES ACT
Posted 3/28/20 – On March 27, 2020, President Trump signed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to provide relief to individuals and businesses. Most notably, this act provides payments of up to $1,200 to individuals ($2,400 for married couples) and $500 per child. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, president pro tempore of the U.S. Senate, has a comprehensive F.A.Q. section on his website regarding these individual payments. For a full breakdown of the entire act, please read this Consumer Reports article which includes a link to the full 880-page document.
NO LPSO EMPLOYEES HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19
Posted 3/28/20 – As we share numbers with you daily about how COVID-19 is impacting Lafourche Parish, we want to also share that at this point, no LPSO employee is hospitalized with any symptoms connected to the current COVID-19 outbreak. When appropriate and when certain criteria are met, employees are being tested for the virus, but no tests to date have yet yielded a positive result.
HOW WE’RE RESPONDING TO SICK EMPLOYEES
Posted 3/28/20 – Sheriff Webre wants all employees to know that LPSO cares about them and will work with them to make sure you and your families are taken care of and are not hurt financially because of illness at this time. When Congress first passed the Families First Act, our actions with regards to our employees was already above and beyond what the law mandated. We know that being on the front line of this situation is difficult enough and we appreciate your service and sacrifice. Know that LPSO will be there for you and your family from the first potential sign of sickness through the healing process. Health and healing are the priority. That is why it is crucial you coordinate with your supervisor and the Personnel Division immediately, so we can help you and your families navigate the situation.
REMINDER: LPSO EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE
Posted 3/28/20 – This situation can be overwhelming. If you would like to talk to someone about it, you are encouraged to contact members of the Employee Crisis Team: Captain Lafate Day, Captain Jessica Davis, or Captain Shannon Delatte. If you are experiencing a crisis of any kind – professional, personal, mental, financial, or other – please speak to one of these individuals.

Courts will also handle magistrates, bonds, and arraignments via audio/visual methods for incarcerated individuals. Questions can be directed to the Clerk of Court from 8am to 1pm.
SECOND COVID-19 DEATH IN LAFOURCHE
Posted 3/27/20 – As you can see with today’s numbers, we’ve had our second death due to COVID-19 in Lafourche Parish, as well as two more cases to bring our total to 30. Statewide, we are now over 100 deaths (119 total) and we have 2,746 documented cases across 54 parishes out of 64.
LPSO STUDY HALL
Posted 3/27/20 – For those with school-aged children, we know most of you had alternate arrangements when schools were abruptly closed. We had a few opt to use our newly created “Study Hall” which has been a truly successful operation. As schools continue to be closed during this emergency, if the need arises for you to utilize this service we created, please let us know. Here is a sample itinerary showing what a day at Study Hall looks like. Here is the enrollment form as well.
BURN BAN CLARIFICATION
Posted 3/27/20 – As we announced two days ago, a statewide BURN BAN is in effect. With that said, the Fire Marshal has issued some clarification to the burn ban. He stated that barbecue pits, fire pits and small campfires are permitted during the burn ban when used for brief, recreational purposes. Placing brush materials into a fire pit to burn away for extended periods of time is not permitted. The containment method of the fire is not the exception, but rather the use is. Keep in mind, that parish government or local fire departments may enact more stringent guidelines, but we are not aware of any at this time.
COVID-19 F.A.Q. FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT
Posted 3/27/20 – What’s an N95 Mask? What’s the difference between an N95 mask and a surgical mask or dust cover? Why do hospitals need more ventilators? Many of you have had these questions and more. PoliceOne.com has created a Frequently Asked Questions page for law enforcement to answer some of those questions. READ MORE…
LAFOURCHE EXPERIENCES FIRST COVID-19 DEATH
Posted 3/26/20 – As you may have noticed in yesterday’s briefing numbers at the top, Lafourche Parish had its first COVID-19 death. No information has been made public about the patient who died. There have been no new deaths in Lafourche Parish since then which is why the number remains at 1.
NEW GUIDANCE ON COVID-19 SICKNESS & TESTING
Posted 3/26/20 – Because COVID-19 is caused by a novel (new) coronavirus, scientists are learning more about it every day. To that end, health officials have issued new guidance on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 if you are sick and who should get tested. For example, they are no longer calling for self-isolation for 14 days. Please click on these each image to review these flyers to keep yourself informed. SICKNESS FLYER | TESTING GUIDANCE FLYER
NETCHEX INSTRUCTIONS
Posted 3/26/20 – Barret Ellender sent an email to all employees on March 25, 2020, detailing how to enter time into Netchex for this and future pay periods. Those who are coming to work like normal with no change in schedule can enter time as normal. If your schedule has been modified in any way, please check that email for instructions. If you are sick, please contact Personnel for guidance.
ONLINE COMMISSARY & DEPOSITS FOR INMATES
Posted 3/26/20 – LPSO is now offering online purchases and deposits for inmate commissary at both the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex and Transitional Work Program. We will be putting information out to the public on this later today, but please feel free to direct people to our website and our app where the functionality is already available. The direct link is www.LPSO.net/commissary.
DISINFECTING ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Posted 3/26/20 – Using hand sanitizer and soap won’t make much of a difference if you’re touching a dirty phone or laptop soon thereafter. Like any frequently touched surface, it’s important to clean and disinfect such items often.
For iPhones, Apple recommends cleaning phone surfaces with a microfiber cloth slightly damp with soapy water. You can also use face wipes or baby wipes, or a solution of half water and half rubbing alcohol. If using a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipe, GENTLY wipe the hard, nonporous surfaces, such as the display and keyboard. NEVER spray a liquid directly on an electronic device. You want to clean front and back of the phone – but be careful not to get liquid in any openings on the device such as the audio output, charging port, or around the buttons. As a general rule, it’s best to turn off any electronic device before cleaning. You can use all these methods for phones as well as laptops – and don’t forget to clean the screen, especially if a member of the public has touched the screen (such as for E-citations). Enforcement personnel should be sure to wear gloves during the e-citation process until after the encounter has ended. Any surfaces touched by the public should be cleaned.
To summarize, here are the DOs and DON’Ts of cleaning electronics:
- DO use only soft, lint-free cloths (a damp one, then a dry one)
- DO add a very small amount of soap if necessary
- DO NOT use paper towels or abrasive cloths
- DO NOT allow liquid to get into electronic devices
- DO NOT hold a smartphone or any or electronic device under a faucet
- DO NOT rub too hard when cleaning displays
- DO NOT use aerosol sprays, window cleaners, ammonia, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or abrasive cleaners
SHARING INFORMATION ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Posted 3/25/20 – We have been asking the public to ONLY share information from official sources on social media. As LPSO employees, we should all be adhering to that. We’re beginning to see rumors about specific residents or businesses whose employees have tested positive. We strongly urge you NOT to spread rumors or share information, links, or videos except from official sources such as law enforcement or government agencies.
APRIL RE-CERTS
Posted 3/25/20 – April Re-certs have been postponed until further notice. No determination has been made regarding re-certs for May or beyond. We will duly inform all affected employees once those determinations are made. For anyone whose POST Firearms certification expires in April, those expiration dates have been extended to May per the Governor’s proclamation.
BURN BAN
Posted 3/25/20 – The Louisiana State Fire Marshal has issued a statewide BURN BAN which went into effect at 8am today. This was done in anticipation that there may be an increase in open burning as families look for ways to pass the time at home. This may lead to calls for service for open burning.

Posted 3/25/20 – We were able to procure 20 one-gallon bottles of hand sanitizer. These bottles have been distributed to all LPSO facilities for use by all employees.
FREE ONLINE DOCTOR VISITS
Posted 3/25/20 – On March 18, 2020, Lori Folse emailed all employees about BlueCare from Blue Cross & Blue Shield. We are encouraging all employees to enroll which takes about two minutes. For more information on how your health insurance company is handling this pandemic, go to www.bcbsla.com/covid19.
TIPS FOR ENFORCEMENT & CORRECTIONS PERSONNEL
Posted 3/25/20 – We all know about social distancing and how important it is right now for us to limit direct contact with people when we can. That’s not always possible, especially for those working in enforcement and corrections. We have some tips to protect yourself when “distancing” isn’t possible.
- When you can’t keep a 6-foot distance, use PPE provided by LPSO (gloves, face shields, etc.).
- Eye protection is important and should completely cover your eyes on the front and side.
- Always use disposable gloves once and safely dispose of them before touching another person or as soon as practical. Wash hands or at least use hand sanitizer after removing gloves.
- Ask complainants to come outside if possible and always allow emergency medical personnel to assess and treat patients.
- Clean your duty belt with the disinfectant spray we provided you.
- If your uniform is contaminated (such as being spit on, sneezed/coughed on or exposed to blood), change into a clean uniform. At a minimum, wear a clean uniform every day and wash your uniform after each use being careful not to shake your clothes when taking them off or before cleaning. Don’t just pile them up in a hamper.
- When transporting a person, close partitions between you and them. Open any outside air vents or a window in the driver’s area and the rear of the vehicle to create airflow to move out of the patrol vehicle. Disinfect your patrol vehicle after each transport with the disinfecting spray provided. Clean the passenger compartments and anything that may have been touched or exposed to respiratory droplets and that includes areas in the driver’s compartment if you did not have gloves on during your interaction with the person.
- To avoid dangerous drug interactions, alcohol-based hand sanitizers should not be used if you suspect you have had contact with an illicit drug.
- Avoid touching your face and do not wash your face until after washing your hands.
- For more guidance for first responders from the CDC, CLICK HERE.

This short video s an eye-opening demonstration of how to properly and thoroughly wash your hands.
PROPERTY TAX SALE PROCESS EXTENDED
Posted 3/24/20 – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheriff Craig Webre announced the annual property tax sale process will be extended to a future date to be determined. The process typically begins in April with the tax sale during the summer months. Any remaining balance on property tax payments can be made in full online at www.LPSO.net. Full and partial payments can be mailed in with a check or money order to Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, P.O. Box 5608, Thibodaux, LA 70302. Check or money must be made payable to Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. Once the process resumes, those who still owe will be notified by certified mail regarding the amount due. Please direct any calls from the public with questions about property taxes to extension 4430 or (985) 449-4430.

GOVERNOR’S “STAY AT HOME” ORDER
Posted 3/23/20 – Yesterday, in our briefing addendum, we notified you about Governor Edwards’ “Stay at Home” order. In a nutshell, the purpose of this order is to encourage all Louisiana residents to stay home unless absolutely necessary to leave your home. The order effectively shut down non-essential businesses such as barbershops, salons, and clothing stores (for example). It’s important to note that grocery stores, gas stations, and pharmacies will remain open, and restaurants can still serve takeout or delivery. You can see the Governor’s full news release and order here.
HOW THE “STAY AT HOME” ORDER AFFECTS LPSO
Posted 3/23/20 – Be on the lookout for an Executive Order from Sheriff Webre on this topic. The Executive Staff met this morning to discuss staffing following Governor Edwards’ “Stay at Home” order. Because law enforcement is defined as “essential,” our agency remains largely unaffected by this order. For the small percentage of employees, the order does affect; supervisors will be informing those employees today about any modified schedules. ALL employees will continue to be paid as normal. If there are any changes to how we log time in Netchex, that will be addressed in a future briefing.
HOMEMADE HAND SANITIZER
Posted 3/23/20 – Having trouble finding hand sanitizer in stores? To make your own, combine 2/3 cup isopropyl alcohol (91-99%) and 1/3 cup aloe vera gel. You can also add 8-10 drops of essential oils of your choice (optional).

The District Attorney’s Office has canceled all appointments for March 23-27. The D.A. staff is reporting to work as normal, but the building will be closed to the public. D.A. staff will be available through email or phone calls.
DISINFECTANT SPRAY
Posted 3/21/20 – Disinfectant spray is now available to all employees who use LPSO units. This is a premixed solution to specifically decontaminate the upholstery and interior of a vehicle. Do not add anything to the contents of this bottle. The contents have been precisely measured for maximum effectiveness.
The solution will be used between transports and sprayed on the surfaces that came into contact with the person being transported. Use the mist setting on the bottle moderately spray the area in question and let sit for five minutes. Then wipe the surface (this step is optional). The solution is not a personal disinfectant. It can be used on any inanimate objects or surfaces. This solution does not contain bleach but is a Quaternary compound used to kill bacteria and viruses. Here is the Safety Data Sheet describing the ingredients and precautions.
We have already distributed to the Patrol Division, Transitional Work Program, Correctional Complex, and a few others. Bottles can be refilled at the Correctional Complex. If you would like to utilize the solution and have not been provided any, check with your supervisor.
KEEPING YOUR DISTANCE
Posted 3/21/20 – While everyone is encouraged to practice social distancing by staying home and avoiding crowds, law enforcement officers must continue to come to work where we may come into contact with people regularly. As much as possible, keep a distance of six feet between you and others. The CDC is recommending NO handshakes and NO hugs. Click on the graphic to enlarge.
WHAT IS COVID-19?
Posted 3/20/2020 – COVID-19 is short for “Coronavirus Disease, 2019.” While coronaviruses have been around for many years, this is a new strain. There is no treatment and no vaccine. Because it is new, there is much that is unknown. What health experts DO know is that it is highly contagious and can result in death. The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure: fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Most people will recover. The elderly and those with chronic health conditions are more susceptible to serious illness or death. In milder cases, people may contract the virus and show no symptoms, but they can still transmit the infection to others. READ MORE…
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
Posted 3/20/2020 – COVID-19 is primarily spread through the air by coughing & sneezing close personal contact and touching an object with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes. To protect yourself: wash your hands often for 20 seconds with soap and water; avoid touching your mouth/nose/eyes, and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. READ MORE…
WHAT TO DO IF YOU’RE SICK
Posted 3/20/2020 – If you are sick or you are showing COVID-19 symptoms (including a fever over 100° F), you should not come to work. Notify your immediate supervisor and the Personnel Division that you are sick and what your symptoms are. If you have COVID-19 symptoms or believe you may have come into contact with an infected person, please call your doctor.
“SOCIAL DISTANCING”
Posted 3/20/2020 – Because people may carry COVID-19 with no symptoms at all, the very best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is social distancing. Essentially, this means limiting your contact with people outside work and family as much as possible. This is the reason you have seen measures such as the closure of schools, bars, gyms, casinos, and theaters, and why restaurants are restricted to the drive-thru, takeout, and delivery. This is especially important for you to consider with elderly or chronically sick family members.
WHY IS COVID-19 A BIG DEAL?
Posted 3/20/2020 – Social distancing isn’t about stopping the transmission of COVID-19; it’s about slowing it down. While COVID-19 can result in death, the more serious issue is the rate at which it is spreading and causing people to be hospitalized. The reason for the extreme measures you have seen around the world is due to the concern of hospitals becoming overwhelmed in attempting to treat this disease. You may hear the term “flattening the curve.” That stems from a graphic such as this, which shows that by doing nothing, our health care system will be overwhelmed versus how we can avoid that by taking these actions.
RUMOR CONTROL: CURFEW
Posted 3/19/2020 – The Governor has given sheriffs the authority to enact a curfew. While some parishes have enacted one, Sheriff Webre has NOT opted to enact a curfew at this time. Should our situation in Lafourche Parish worsen to the point where a curfew might be the proper response, it could be considered. But at this time, there is no curfew.
RUMOR CONTROL: QUARANTINE/MILITARY MOBILIZATION
Posted 3/19/2020 – Please note the following as it pertains to rumors of a national quarantine or large-scale military mobilization.
- There is no current plan for a nationwide quarantine.
- The National Guard is being deployed to help with sites that have been set up to house persons who are awaiting test results and do not have a place to stay, to help stand up drive-thru testing sites, and to help evaluate structures that may serve as temporary hospitals to support the medical surge we anticipate.
- The National Guard has NOT been deployed to invoke martial law.
- Local governments have the ability shelter in place without approval or direction of the governor.
- Shelter in place, as implemented by other municipalities and states, is not a complete lockdown that requires people to not leave their homes. People are still allowed to go to work, to go to the grocery store, to go to the pharmacy, to go to the doctor, etc.
