Detectives Make Arrest in Thursday Night Murder of Bayou Blue Man

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced a Houma man has been arrested for murder in the shooting death of a Bayou Blue man on Thursday night. Earl Verdin, 22, has been charged with Second Degree Murder in the death of Chad Daigle, 57, of Bayou Blue.

At around 10:35 p.m. on May 12, 2022, deputies were called to a bar in Bayou Blue in reference to a disturbance. Approximately 35 minutes after deputies arrived on the scene and were investigating the disturbance, they received another call of gunshots fired in the area of the intersection of Meadowland Drive and Bayou Blue Road. They learned Daigle had been shot in the torso just outside his residence. He then walked back into his residence, collapsed, and was later pronounced dead.

Through investigation, detectives learned Verdin had confronted Daigle at his home regarding an earlier altercation at one of the bars. Daigle reportedly told Verdin to get off his property. Then, Daigle fired the shotgun into the ground. Verdin, who was armed with a handgun, then fired several rounds at Daigle, striking him.

Verdin turned himself in to investigators early Friday morning. Following questioning, he was arrested and booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex in Thibodaux. He was charged with Second Degree Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Person Convicted of Domestic Abuse Battery. Bail is set at $1.05 million.

Lockport Tobacco Store Owner Arrested for Selling Illegal Products

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and Lockport Chief of Police David Harrelson announced the arrest of a tobacco store owner for selling illegal products. Ahmed Alhusaini, 19, of Lockport, was arrested Thursday as a result of an eight-month investigation.

Since October 2021, narcotics agents had been investigating possible illegal activity at HookaMania, a tobacco store located on Crescent Avenue in Lockport. Through investigation, agents obtained vaping devices sold at the store and submitted them to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for testing. Two devices were found to have delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and another was found to contain a THC derivative classified as synthetic marijuana. Louisiana legalized the sale of hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) products in 2019 which must contain less than 0.3% of delta-9 THC. Because of the very limited amount of THC, CBD products do not create the “high” associated with marijuana. It is illegal, however, for vape cartridges to contain any level of THC.

Agents obtained an arrest warrant for the owner (Alhusaini) as well as a search warrant for the business. On Thursday, May 5, agents arrived at the store and conducted a search. They found suspected THC vape cartridges, THC wax, and marijuana, as well as various drug paraphernalia.

Alhusaini was arrested and transported to the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex in Thibodaux. He was booked on three warrants for Distribution of Cannabinoids/Synthetic Marijuana. He was additionally charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Synthetic Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was released after posting bail in the amount of $60,200.

Citizens are reminded that they can report any drug-related or suspicious activity. Information can be reported directly to the Narcotics section commander, Lieutenant Derek Champagne, at (985) 532-4365 or derek-champagne@lpso.net. Information can also be reported anonymously through Crime Stoppers Bayou Region at 1-800-743-7433, online at CrimeStoppersBR.org, or via the Bayou Tips app on mobile devices.

Two Arrested for Catalytic Converter Thefts in South Lafourche

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced two people have been arrested in connection to catalytic converter thefts in the South Lafourche area. Corey Thomas, 39, and Reynell Gautreaux, 35, both of Grand Isle, were arrested on Wednesday.

On the morning of May 3, deputies responded to a business on Highway 3235 in Galliano in which catalytic converters had been stolen from three vehicles overnight. Saw blades believed to have been used in the crime were left at the scene.

Investigators developed Gautreaux and Thomas as suspects in the theft. They located Gautreaux traveling south toward Larose on LA 24, and they found Thomas at a truck stop in Galliano. During questioning, both admitted to their involvement in the crime. Both were found to have tools associated with the theft of catalytic converters in their possession. Detectives were also able to link Gautreaux to another converter theft on Golden Meadow. Thomas was also found to have methamphetamine in his possession.

Thomas and Gautreaux were both arrested and booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex in Thibodaux. Both were charged with three counts of Theft, three counts of Simple Criminal Damage to Property, and Possession of Tools for a Crime. Gautreaux was charged with an additional count of Theft and Simple Criminal Damage to Property for the theft in Golden Meadow, and her bail is set at $107,500. Thomas was additionally charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, and his bail is set at $175,000.

Sheriff Webre reminds citizens that thefts of catalytic converters have been on the rise worldwide in recent years due to the value of the precious metals inside. Because criminals must crawl under a vehicle to saw off a catalytic converter, pickup trucks, box trucks, vans and SUVs that sit higher off the ground are targeted more often. Hybrid and electric vehicles are also targeted due to the amount of metals inside. Owners are encouraged to park vehicles in garages, secure areas, or well-lit areas whenever possible. Utilizing surveillance cameras can also help deter theft.
